skrmzdh 0 Posted April 25, 2017 Hey guys, new to cutting and the forums. Purchased a second hand AIP 1120 44" cutter/plotter, came with a dinky old computer running XP but i already had the intentions of using the cutter with my MacBook pro laptop running the latest software (MacOS Sierra 10.12.4). The softwares I am using are Signcut Pro1 and Inkscape, saving the images/text created in inkscape as either ".eps" or ".svg". The cutter is connected to my laptop using a USB to Serial adaptor. So I install the software, and the website has a little tutorial for a test cut, which i perform and the machine cuts it out flawlessly (well some flaws, i have to adjust blade height because when its not cutting, its scratching the vinyl moving around), so i disconnect the cable, go sit down and make a few logos I wanted to cut out. I saved them, made sure they were vectored and all, open it up in Signcut and click cut, then nothing. The progress window pops up then instantly goes away. The settings all look correct, havent tinkered with those, baud rate and everything match, tried shutting off laptop, turning cutter on and connecting to laptop, then starting the laptop and tried cutting again to no avail, uninstalled the software and reinstalled multiple times, tried saving the image in either ".svg" and ".eps" formats and still nothing, tried changing the usb port its connected to and again nothing. When I disconnect the usb, signcut says that it cannot connect with the cutter so i know that the laptop and software are recognizing the machine, but it for some reason wont communicate with it? The cutter is not offline, I have set the origin so it knows where to start cutting. I am stumped. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
MZ SKEETER 4,686 Posted April 25, 2017 Just read an ad for a new AIP cutter, It only says for Windows Support Windows XP/Vista/7/8/10 (32 & 64 bit) Besides a serial cable, a USB-serial adapter cable with driver is also provided for you to connect our cutter to the USB port of your computer for Windows XP/Vista/7/8/8.1/10. http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-24-AIP-Vinyl-Cutter-Plotter-software-WinPCSIGN-2018-Basic-USB-conn-Bonus-CD-/282043292264 Unless you have a Tripplite Keyspan Adapter( that is the brand name) most USB to serial cables will not work with a vinyl cutter. I actually went to the manufacturers office, they're based not too far from me. He said that it would work with mac with Signcutpro, the software it comes with though is only for windows. Signcut already has the drivers for the AIP1120
MZ SKEETER 4,686 Posted April 25, 2017 Then it could be the USB to Serial cable that your using....Tripp Lite Keyspan Adapter is what you need to use with a vinyl cutter....Others just will not work. As example. This is what you need. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Tripp-Lite-Usa-19hs-Keyspan-High-speed-Usb-To-Serial-Adapter-/331617779817?hash=item4d35f5c069:g:vKMAAOSw9N1Vu6vr

MZ SKEETER 4,686 Posted April 25, 2017 I don't know anything about a Mac, but did you make sure that the com port numbers match? In windows your have to go to device manager look at the com port number and match in Signcut. Never heard of this brand of vinyl cutter before and I don't know anything about Mac... Did you see it run before you purchased it? Hopefully. Also, you connected a null modem cable to the Tripplite Keyspan Adapter? You must.
Wildgoose 4,190 Posted April 25, 2017 I am a mac user and SIgnCut Pro 1. As you probably already know mac is a bit finicky. Fortunately SignCut has free live tech support and they are about the best people I have ever worked with. Call in and get them working with you. I had to get them to remote into my computer when I was setting up my first cutter but they had me going in just a few minutes. I am betting it's something related to your output port.

Yep have a null modem cable connected to the adaptor going into the cutter. The cutter works fine, when i initially connected it with the adaptor i had, it printed out the signcut logo perfectly fine. Problems occurred after i disconnected it then tried reconnecting to cut something else out

Yeah i heard the signcutpro was kinda iffy on the mac, currently downloading it on my sisters windows7 laptop. Do you know where i can find their number by anychance? Ive emailed them and responses are slow so its kinda annoying. Id love for them to remote my laptop and see if they can figure it out haha. Thanks! I couldnt find their number on the website
Wildgoose 4,190 Posted April 26, 2017 I meant that macs are generally finicky with external devices. Try running a Kodak Printer for instance. Can be done but what a PIA. For support you will start out with a live chat request and then will progress with emails or they may call you. I had a gal named Theresa help me out and remote my iMac. Signcut runs fine on the mac as long as you have the right machine drivers
