noosh 5 Posted September 5, 2012 Hi there! Just wondering if anyone can give me advice on how to remove old vinyl from a plastic signboard. I have to redo this board for a client and I need to clean the old stuff off first. I have tried to peel it off but its so old and brittle the vinyl is just coming off in tiny pieces. Any advice would be great..thanks!
slice&dice 2,450 Posted September 5, 2012 Have you tried GOOF-OFF? Before you use that adhesive remover, the first step would be to scrape the lettering with a flat razor blade on a handle ---
top53 53 Posted September 5, 2012 Might want to try a heat gun. It will leave the glue behind but than you can attack it with acetone or panit thinner. Might want try in a place and make sure it does not melt your substrate.
Jay2703 704 Posted September 5, 2012 +1 on the heat gun and I would use a plastic razor blade instead of metal: http://www.wisdomdetail.ca/scraperite_plastic_razor_holder_with_blade Jay
slice&dice 2,450 Posted September 5, 2012 Acetone on that ABS plastic? Hmmmmmmm....acetone will turn anything made out of ABS into a puddle of melted goo.

Dr12volt1338 116 Posted September 5, 2012 A metal blade will gouge and scratch the plastic if you aren't very very careful.. Any chemical you use to remove the adhesive try it on a small spot out of sight and see how it reacts.
Jay2703 704 Posted September 5, 2012 Goo Gone is citrus based solvent that may work. It is supposed tobe safe on any surface. But as Dr12Volt says, test it on an out of sight surface first. http://www.lowes.com/pd_317365-1168-1647_0__?productId=3102411&cm_mmc=SCE_pricegrabber-_-PriceGrabber-_-PriceGrabber-_-Goo%20Gone%203%20Oz.%20Remover Jay
