kart45 6 Posted October 21, 2009 Here's some photos kind of documenting the process for my current job. This is my biggest job to date and my first doing a true 're-face' with acrylic, hang rail, zip-track and the whole 9... (Needless to say I'm learning a LOT!) Starts out with some cut Impact Modified acrylic and supplies. Got the vinyl cut now ready to install hang-rail and zip-track. Learned just how fast acrylic cement dries and I like it! Oh and the letters even fit in the channel like they're supposed too - whodathunkit

kart45 6 Posted October 22, 2009 Night #2 - Rollin along on #2: Zip-Track and Hang-Rail set, title text placed, checking graphic and slogan final fit. Just a note - I am learning in a hurry the tracking and accuracy extent of my trusty PCUT... pics don't show all the wasted red translucent vinyl (18.99/yd!) all over the floor... Anyways, also come to realize (yet again ) that I do need a bigger shop. much bigger
SSW 0 Posted October 22, 2009 looking good! What type of board are you using for the substrate?
bamafan2277 50 Posted October 22, 2009 Yea on the long lenghts the pcut can be a pain to get alligned just right. sometimes I can hit it dead on the first time for 8' lengths others it takes me 20 minutes! Looking great so far!!
TaterNuts 3 Posted October 22, 2009 Looks Very Good.... Looking forward to see the completed sign!

kart45 6 Posted October 24, 2009 Got it all installed this morning... I am wondering what happpened - everything went like it was supposed to! No grinders, last minute cutting, duct tape, zip ties, safety wire... nothing! I literally cannot remember any project I've done thats anything close to this scope and size without a day of blood, sweat and tears... Anyways - here's the pics. The cradle on the bucket is most definitely a life saver and absolutely necessary for any installation requiring a lift.
kart45 6 Posted October 24, 2009 and here it is, had to snap another pic driving away... still in a stupor that it only took 1.5 hrs to install... (nevermind the week of design & prep )
mabscotthandyman 1,410 Posted October 25, 2009 6x10 face ? Finshed job looks great what kind of a price did you get installed if you dont mind saying. Dan
kart45 6 Posted October 25, 2009 Dan - this part of the contract was for $1000; but that price was contingent upon another $1000 for bldg mtd signs too, and there's some more room left in there for profitability (hopefully...) Either way he had two separate local companies put in bids too and I was only cheaper by a couple hundred, (apparently the market around here is getting pretty tight, but I'd bet that's the case everywhere). I've been friends with him and have helped his son out racing sprint cars for the last 3 yrs so he came looking for me which was nice
SSW 0 Posted October 26, 2009 What type of substrate is that?
kart45 6 Posted October 26, 2009 What type of substrate is that? Impact Modified Acrylic
SSW 0 Posted October 26, 2009 Ah ok. Didn't know what that was. I had to google it, lol. where do you get it from? Just curious as to what people are using for these big signs. Just in case I get a customer thats wanting one, I know what to use.
kart45 6 Posted October 26, 2009 I get it from our local supplier here Sun Supply. It comes in 6x12 sheets and I have them cut it to my measurements. Anything bigger than that and they say most likely have to go with lexan, which about 2x price per sq.ft. from what I've seen.
mabscotthandyman 1,410 Posted October 26, 2009 Lexan is much higher, but if you go much bigger than a a flat panel may come out with wind i usaly use a pan face or flex face on larger signs Dan
kart45 6 Posted November 9, 2009 And here's the second phase of the project. Building mounted 4x8 white Dibond using 3M vinyl. used white sheet metal screws around the border and installed some big 'ol stainless lags & washers at centers & corners for an architectural/industrial look. 3/8" lags looked huge when I picked 'em up but should have gone bigger cause you can't really see them anyways haha . I will say that the Dibond is worth the expense . That is some awesome stuff. Easy to work with, hangs nice and doesn't bow or flex very much.
mabscotthandyman 1,410 Posted November 10, 2009 Yea got to love dibond works great lays flat, strong and lightweight. your work looks great, Dan
