Hi,

I have an issue with my cutter, when i cut large complex files the cutter seems to complete the cut almost to the end then cuts big lines all over the vinyl.

I'm using MT871 cutter and using artcut, it seems to be when all of the data finished sending on the screen that it starts. i have tried it using paper and pen and i get the same results.

I have added a picture of the line i got tonight before i quickly stopped it.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

The MH series cutters are more limited on memory, than most of the value cutters.   Possibly remove some of the nodes and simplify the design more.  A Keyspan adapter, (that's the brand name)  could possibly help you with the data flow more.  Or a serial connection or serial card.

Sorry i didn't say how it was connected, i have a serial to usb adapter but it doesnt look like anything special just says 'usb serial converter' on it. Also i only just realised tonight that it is a mt 871 not mh871 does this mean anything?

Just a regular USB to serial are not good.  USCUTTER only recommends the Keyspan Adapter  or a Belkin.  Here is from a previous tech support conversation on the forum.

The issue could be a number of different things, likely static related if it's just stopping in the middle of cuts. The USB to serial adapter wont resolve the static issues but it can help to mitigate them since a serial connection is harder to interrupt. First, if your cutter is a first generation MH (mk1) it will need to have a Null Modem serial cable coming from the cutter to the adapter. Second, most radio shack USB to Serial adapters will not work... Or Staples or Office Depot for that matter. That's why we only carry the Keyspan USB to serial adapter. It's the only one that we can say for sure will work as it should every time and we've tested it thoroughly.  Another solid USB to serial adapter is a Belkin- but in either case you have to have a Null Modem serial cable for either to work. Banner John is correct in that a serial connection is given COM 1 by default, however, if you're using a USB to serial adapter it will likely get a regular COM port number in the device manager. If none of this helps, be sure to call in to the support department and speak with Mike Northman. 425-902-1302

It may not totally fix your problem, but it will help for most any value cutter.  Such as the MH.  You may want to ditch that Artcut also.  Most do..  You can download  Free Signblazer elements and use it for the MH cutter.  It is an unlimited trial.  Owner passed away several years back, so Freeware now.   Your welcome...

I now have a keyspan adapter, i set everything up tonight to test it, i have successfully cut the large file i couldn't before, i tried it again to see what happened but it just seemed to pause mid cut. i cut a very small file and it also stopped neer the end.. is there any specific settings i need to enter? i tried the small file again with my old adapter and it completed it fine..

If you are not doing this,  you must...  ALWAYS turn your cutter off, and back on, after a cut, so the data is dumped from the last order...And before you start a new project..  Other wise, your just overloading the memory.  Those MH cutters and most value cutters, have very limited memory.  Try that and see how it does.

I don't think you have to turn it off and on.

After each cut I just push the reset button and I don't have any problems with memory overload.

Yep....I forget that those have reset buttons on the side.  I know when I used my Seiki,,  they don't have reset buttons.like that. .(2006)  So, I always turned my cutter off to dump the data before the next order.  I ran some really detailed designs. it would lose memory, and the carriage head just drift off to the left.  This was way before I ever discovered this forum.

I think i have sorted it now, i uninstalled the windows 8.1 drives and installed vista ones, also noticed the reset button didn't help turning the power switch off for 30seconds has worked. the combination has let me do the problematic design 3 times over. Thank you for all your help

I was in the same boat with my Seiki and didn't know this place existed back then. Hit cut 1 day and walked away but when I came back a few minutes later it had cut a diagonal line down a new 10 yd. roll of red vinyl from 1 end to the other. I learned 2 valuable lessons that day 1: never leave that cutter unattended and 2: a value cutter can track a roll a lot farther than you might think.

Hi again,

I have been trying to cut again today and i have run into the stopping mid cut problem again. I have noticed when it does this the keyspan adapter needs to be unplugged then plugged back in before i can do any further cuts. so today when it stopped i ran the diagnostics on the keyspan tool and got the error "test fail cannot open port".

do you think this could be a settings / driver issue or even a windows 8 issue?

I switched back to my old adapter and managed to cut fine..

Thanks again

Steve

I would not be surprised if it was win 8 doing it.

I tried it for all of 4 days before I dumped it.

For cutting, there is nothing that beats good old XP.

And you don't need a high end computer for cutting.

A lot of people are using pretty old computers.
