polarkiss 1 Posted August 11, 2008 Is there a way to layer vinyl without using app tape? This sounds like an absurd question, yes I know. But I saw on a thread a while ago that someone posted pictures of a large car decal - I think it was Grape Ape or a similar name... I tried to find a link to it but no luck. and there were pictures of it layered and not applied... with no app tape on it. Any idea or am I just bonkers?? lol and I am still here, lurking - it has just been a very busy summer

For teh car=wrap process, they print on teh vinyl, pply a clear laminate, then dry=apply it onto the vehicle. Here is a write up on how the wrap i did for Nitto Tires to show how the wrap is applied and its process. http://www.nittotire.com/blog_detail.asp?id=
polarkiss 1 Posted August 11, 2008 No, it was not printed vinyl... I am pretty sure it was layered and pieced. I know I'm not crazy... and I even replied to the thread asking how he did it, but there was no response. It was about 2 months ago, but I can't find it for the life of me. firemalt 10 Posted August 12, 2008 I think if the image is big enough, or if it's not something too involved, you could just peel off the backing, and lay the vinyl on the base layer... but you'd only have one shot. Just makes more sense to put app tape on, and apply wet.
Guest rvgraphixs Posted August 17, 2008 I used app tape on every piece I put on top and I did a wet application. Edit: It was a solid black piece for back ground then built up on that.
sdgirl 13 Posted August 27, 2008 It looks great. I am new and haven't done any work yet waiting for my cutter. Although it seems I have a lot to learn before I could do anything as awesome as that ape!
lori 0 Posted August 27, 2008 I have done some like this. I almost find it easier to work with the vinyl without the app. tape. Here is one that did using that method.

That's a lot of little pieces of vinyl to work without a wet/app tape layering. Any chance you have pics of the piece as you were layering on the colors?
