Backlit sign queston

I am getting ready to do a 2 layer back lit sign. my question is, there are going to be black and red stars. red stars with a black outline. I am using oracale vinyl(one the recommend for backlit signs). To make it look right during the day and at night when lit up. Now do i make it so the black is a complete layer under the red or cut it out so the red actually sticker to the acrylic and the black is just an outline.

Thats what I was thinking. What is the easiest way to do that. I am using inkscape and flexistarter?  Do 2 stars outset the black one, then hit the difference so has the outline.

not sure on starter on flexi pro it's under effects and outline - then you can set the width and distance on the outline

so if you have flexi pro, does that do what I use inkscape for?

Maybe make the shape of the sign in black, then type your text just make it white for now. When its all in place copy and paste it off to the side. Then go back and select the text and black, then compound by color. Bam! now you have your outline and the text will fit perfectly.
