Could it be an import thing? Have you tried just making a shape inside Flexi and cutting it?

I know with Inkscape DXF's always come in as a bunch of separate lines. -
For the serial port connection I think you need a "Null Modem" cable.

Couple of odd-ball US Cutter Product questions

"Portable Work Table Frame" It will depend on how things are connected at the corners and the table top you put on. I think you will have to add some bracing on the sides to make it really stable. Something like the attached picture, triangles are a lot more stable than rectangles. -
If it's internally lighted, you need to use acrylic and translucent vinyl if you're doing any colors other than black.

The setting might be called overlap in Signblazer. -
Get one of those 2-color pens and have both tools in one pen.
