VinylRevamp 93 Posted January 12, 2016 Hi, How can I open/convert an ai file in inkscape to an SVG? Thanks!

darcshadow 1,626 Posted January 12, 2016 If you have Inkscape setup to open EPS files, you can try renaming them as an eps and then try opening them with Inkscape. It works quite often.
BearlyRich 167 Posted January 13, 2016 I haven't done this in a while, but as I remember, there is quite a difference between "open" and "import". I found many files that would only work with one or the other but not both...
dcbevins 340 Posted January 13, 2016 Illustrator .ai files that were saved with PDF Compatibility enabled can be renamed to .pdf and behave like a pdf file. Inkscape can open .pdf. Inkscape used to open .ai files directly, but when Illustrator got svg export, they took it out. Inkscape isn't too picky about open verses import. Open goes to a new document and import places the file inside the current one.
