Paint mask experiance

Recommended Posts

Anyone have any experiences good or bad with paint mask material? I am looking to buy a roll and need some insight on the different brands. I was looking at the Oracal brand at USCUTTER, but it has a water based adhesive and I am just not sure how that will work with solvent based spray can paint.

I've used Oracal paintmask. I've used latex paint and spray paint and I have not had any problems. What kind of paint are you using (solvent?) What kind of surface are you using it on?

The blue paint mask is stiffer, 811 I think. The 810 is flexible, when you pull it off it can stretch. Make sure the paint has dried well before you remove the mask or you could pull the paint with it. Sometimes I take a exacto knife and gently go around the design to insure a clean release. It's extra work, but so is re-doing the whole thing.

I've always used Oracal, sorry I don't have any experience with the other brands.

The vehicles are mostly restored vintage army Jeeps and trucks. The finish on the vehicles is a flat slightly textured surface. The is your typical spray can type of paint. What concern me was most of the paint mask products including Oracal listed waterbased adhesives and I did not know if that would be a problem

I've used spray paint on a few personal projects with the Oracal mask and have not experienced any problems. You could try using the mask on a discrete area as a test. I don't think you'll have any problems, but that just my opinion. I don't have enough experience to be considered an expert.

Post some pics of your project, I'm sure there are a lot of people here that could give you some more guidance. Maybe post in another area of the forum to get a better response.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Hey you have been a big help I appreciate your input   Maybe I'm being overly cautious. I just don't want to buy a roll of material I can't use  :D After checking other brands it appears most of them are waterbased adhesives.

You could go to the Oracal website and request a sample (8x10). I just asked for a sample of their 951 vinyl, should be here this week. Good luck

The water based adhesive should not be a problem.  You wouldn't want to use a solvent based adhesive when using a solvent based paint, the paint could dissolve the adhesive and leech under the mask.

If it's a textured surface I'd go with the softer mask material.  As stated before just be sure it's dry before removing the mask.

The 810S is the best for your application according to the oracal website.  It says it's best for solvent based paints, for automotive use, etc.

I think I'd have to follow their lead on this, so try the 810S.
