I did a bit when I was younger. These days I've been working with a few screen printers creating one-color Halftone files for Screening and producing Plastisol Transfers. (both raster and vector) Also, a good number of color seperation projects for spot and 4 color process. Been a real learning experience. Here's a detail from a mashup I did for some Trump Campaign Plastisol transfers tees. and "Nice (split fountain) gradient, Jay". (The caption reads, "Get Pumped with Trump!")

Have a look at this video; (also, look in Vm's help files (F1>Keyword Search) for the terms "overwide" or "overlong". -
Buster, what you are describing is the example on the Left. What I'm describing yields the results on the right. Note the difference.

Sounds like you auto traced a raster image and did not discard the original... do that then, select & duplicate the new vector image then follow the above instructions from darcshadow and myself.
-
For a one layer cutout, do what darc says above then Select both layers and Menu>Path>Difference. The remaining piece gets cut out of light material to go over a dark substrate.

Basically, draw the curve or arched path with the Bezier pen. Type out the text. Select the text and shift select the curve. Then Menu>Text>Put on Path. I have a Wacom Intuos 3 6x9 and have issues with inkscape. Fortunately, I don't use Inkscape so much the past years or so but for most things the (pen) cursor was there moving around but wouldn't select properly. -

When you do your Live Trace in Illustrator, select >Tracing Options>Ignore White. Save as a vector or, if a PNG (not an option with my Illustrator) "Transparent Background". JPG's will not support Transparent Bkgrnds.

Agreed, "got your money's worth". $60 a year is around a buck fifteen a week; Chump Change for the amount of time and effort that tool saves my business. Bonus = they're on sale again at US Cutter with the free roll 12" of transfer tape for (edit) $59 plus shipping.

Vinyl Master Versions
skarekrow replied to Signs and Designs's topic in VinylMaster CUT, LTR, PRO & DSR
Open Vm>Menu>Help>Help Topics>Installing & Activating VinylMaster. All of the info is in there. You do not have to have the computer you are activating connected to the internet.
