As a starting point I would check the tension of the carriage belt - maybe too much slop -

Glad you got it worked out! make sure you have the stand grounded to the cutter and a surge suppressor on the computer and cutter -

How do you figure cost of wear and tear on equipment?

I would thing depreciate the cost over the expected lifetime of the equipment - seldom do people keep the same printer for over 3-4 years where the cutter would be better over 5 years -
