ralais 0 Posted July 30, 2008 Remember that big piece of vinyl I cut of me? Well, I had it in my office (yes, I'm corny like that)... and someone saw it & asked about it. When I told them about the amzing uscutter plotter I had they asked me to do a job for them... well, for the company to be exact. While I'm very excited, I also need some guidence. I was asked to make car magnets for doors for the company vehicles. I need magnets that are about 12+" x 18+" The logos are two colors so I know I need to layer... which means I need application tape (which I am finally ordering today). Should I use a clear of wet application since it is on a magnet? And where is the best / cheapest place to buy car magnets?
BannerJohn 1,324 Posted July 30, 2008 I always do magnets WET. If you have several to do,it wlould be cost-effective for you to buy a roll...if just a few,pre-cut. Fellers which is near you, would be as cheap as anyone.
ralais 0 Posted July 30, 2008 What type of vinyl should I use?
JoeCamaro 11 Posted July 30, 2008 How many are them?
ralais 0 Posted July 30, 2008 There are 5 at the moment... Maybe 10. Since they are 2 colors... do I still use the wet to stick one layer on top of the other? Can anyone tell me what type of vinyl this is... http://www.uscutterdirect.com/BGS-24-Sampler-Pack-Multi-color-Vinyl-Roll_p_18-76.html
JoeCamaro 11 Posted July 30, 2008 Ok ralais This is what you have to do: 1. Find a magnetic sign supplier, as John said you can either get them by rolls or pre cut. I get them locally by the foot. 2. Get your vinyl. As it is for outdoor use and you want it to last, dont get the economy vinyl. 651 should be fine. 3. Do the artwork. If sign will be 12" x 24" do the design 10" x 22" or so, so you have a margin around the sign. Dont go all the way to the border. 4. You can layer your vinyl before or after, it is up to you. Make sure you search for registration marks and read the posts. 5. Place on sign. 6. Deliver. 7. Get your money. Joe
RegisG 0 Posted July 30, 2008 If there is a sign supply usa near you, they have 50' roll on sale untill the end of July. Cuts very easy with utility knife. I simply made a pattern (11" X 18") for cars. The 12" is good for trucks but hits a lot of cars on chrome strip or sharper bend accross the door. firemalt 10 Posted July 30, 2008 I second getting a roll versus the pre-cut pieces. This is where you'll make alot of your profit. Check your PM box for pricing ideas...

Get their Oracal 651 for magnets. Don't worry Rala they are very simple to do, I mean almost too simple. :)
ralais 0 Posted July 30, 2008 Thanks my forum family. I am really excited... yet very nervous. I am getting ready to place my order upon ALL of your recommendations. You guys are great!
firemalt 10 Posted July 30, 2008 Agreed... easy money makers! I'd say easier and more profitable than banners! Do yourself a favor, and go to walmart or hobby lobby and buy yourself a scrapbook corner cutter... to round off the magnet corners.

I feel like I'm charging them too much." :) But you're not charging them too much, make 'er while you can.

dragonfyre1976 0 Posted July 30, 2008 Congratulations!!!! I know you'll do a great job!!! I had a slight problem doing my first multi-color job (for myself) WET but I think I used to much app fluid or something, the vinyl wouldn't stick to the window... I used squares that were snapped to my grid that way I knew they were all in the same spot, worked pretty well for me... Remeber to post pics when your done!!! ralais 0 Posted July 30, 2008 Application FLUID??? What fluid??? no one ever told me about fluid!!! I figured wet = water!!!
BannerJohn 1,324 Posted July 30, 2008 plain water will work. I make my own fluid..just a drop or two in a quart spray bottle...dishwashing liquid...water...and there it is.
ralais 0 Posted July 30, 2008 Oh... I can handle that. I got even MORE nervous for a moment. I will have to get some dishwashing liquid... any particular kind? I use those cute little detergent cubes in my dishwasher... or call Joe over to wash them for me.
firemalt 10 Posted July 30, 2008 Dawn. John's special home brew mixture: 3 parts water 1 part rubbing alcohol a few drops of dish soap I just washed out an empty 1/2 gallon milk jug, and made/store my mixture in there.
SynFX 1 Posted July 30, 2008 Here are a few I did to give you an idea on design/size etc.. * 18" x 24" for these. 2 color applications. Generally black goes first for the base, then color over that. I charged $100 a set for the Century 21 magnetics and about $75 a set for the Cables. *12" x 24" for my personal. 3 color application. Black first then blue and silver, I typically dont use wet app. but would recommend it if you are unsure.. As they all say, magnetics are the easiest.. biggest profiting jobs you can get! I love making magnetics, easy, fast, affordable and great profit margin! You can get a roll of Magnum Magnetics 24" x 25' for $65. Thats about $5.40 per set of magnetics. IF you were to buy them individually you would spend around $12 a pair. You save about $6 a set! Call Fellers 800-654-8405 to order. They also have everything else you will need for this project and more to come. I would recommend the 3M SCPS-2 Application tape, I have used everything else and nothing compares. This can be picked up from Fellers for $80 for a 24" x 100yd roll. Also, if you order more than $75 you get FREE shipping, you may want to ask about that.. thats what they do for me. As everyone else stated, standard 5 - 6 year vinyls will be just fine to use for this project or most, as many clients will not pay for the good stuff.. CHEAP! Be sure to submit the design so we can check it out and give you recommendations on changes, application order, or general thoughts about the project! GOOD LUCK!! Hope this helps.. ralais 0 Posted July 30, 2008 It all helps... thanks. I have a Fellers here in town (about 20 mins away) & they said I can pick up (same day even) anytime, just call first. So that's a good thing. I am going to buy precut this time but rolled magnetic bases for next time. As for the tape... I'm still nervous about that part.
