haumana 1,221 Posted June 11, 2008 what are the 'old school' cast iron tubs coated with?? Enamel or porcelain? (or is it one in the same?) our 'new(er)' house has a cast iron, and I don't think I'll be able to get it out of the house (no one wants to labor to get it out), so I thought I'd better get it as close to white and looking brand spankin' new as possible. What's the best thing to clean this beast? It just seems like it's got some serious soap scum, but I will admit that it does add for traction. Regardless, I don't bathe in this tub (it has not shower) but would at least give the appearance of keeping a tidy house http://midpacsolutions.com/emoticons/thumbs.gif. I'm sure I'll have more off topic questions regarding the downstairs shower, but I thought I'd start with the upstairs first I'm guessing that this stuff can withstand the full strength of comet and ajax, and not have to worry about soft scrub or the non-abrasive stuff. Is it worth hitting it with a s.o.s. steel wool pad? Any input is appreciated.
Guest kenya Posted June 11, 2008 Have you tried "the works". http://www.theworkscleans.com/tub.htm We install shower door units & if we are putting one on a heavily used tub or shower, we clean it with this first. You don't have to worry about getting any on the metal around your tub. But if anyone tries to use this on shower doors, it will etch the metal. Sometimes the only thing that will remove really bad buildup is "lacquer thinner". But some homeowners find the smell offensive. Hope I've helped.
Benr98 40 Posted June 11, 2008 Haumana, Well I don't have a cast iron tub, but here are a couple links I found..hope they can help you. http://www.vintagetub.com/asp/tub_cleaning_guide.asp http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_will_clean_a_bath_tub_that_is_old_and_refuses_to_come_clean Jenny
slopchops 1 Posted June 11, 2008 Porcelain finish they have. I haven't went to all the links posted here, but it sounds reasonable to use a good car cleaner/wax. There is a cleaner out for boat hulls and I found a can in the garage I bought. It worked great in cleaning off water from lake scum. Left a brilliant finish. Hope things work out for you.
