Hummer 21 Posted April 13, 2013 I had read somewhere that you can purchase 'conversion kit' of some sort to convert a cutter into an engraver. (to engrave soft medal or plexi-glass) Is this correct? Does it bugger up the cutter? Has anyone ever done this to their cutter? Any information or links would be greatly appreciated. Thank you... Probably a dumb question, but I am curious... OWJones 1,981 Posted April 13, 2013 There is at least one vendor on ebay that sells kits for doing this - I thought about converting my old R31 cutter into an engraver, but I do enough different things already... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Diamond-engraving-kit-for-Vinyl-cutter-SM-Vinyl-Express-R-series-31-19-/360399030234?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item53e974c7da
Hummer 21 Posted April 13, 2013 Thank you OWJones, I have looked at this site. I just wanted to know if this could mess up my cutter, is there a special software to use, etc. I have a Graphtec CE5000-60 and also a cheap Chinese cutter (also a Cricut, don't laugh) and was more curious than anything. Any thoughts from anyone else?
OWJones 1,981 Posted April 13, 2013 As far as messing up your cutter goes, the actual "conversion" and use shouldn't do anything irreversible to your cutter... However, any machine that scrapes away tiny bits of brass and aluminum and that doesn't have some sort of vacuum or blower accessory to keep those tiny bits of metal out of it's own workings, is going to eventually have issues. Hummer 21 Posted April 14, 2013 Thanks for the comments. I was wondering if I put a 'blank' on a cricut mat and engraved it, wouldn't the shavings stick to the mat?
