Mr Peabody 0 Posted June 11, 2009 Hi everyone, I have some friends who are State's Attorneys and received this last night and thought this might help someone from getting taken. You might want to share this with your friends and family. If you know of any elderly folks, you might want to tell them about it if they don't have email. A copy of the email I received is below, if you want to copy and paste so you can email it feel free. Peabody Jury Duty Scam DO NOT DELETE WITHOUT READING ! Pass this on. This has been verified by the FBI (their link is also included below). Please pass this on to everyone in your email address book. It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call. Most of us take those summonses for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty, that a new and ominous kind of fraud has surfaced. The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and bingo; your identity was just stolen. The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma , Illinois , and Colorado . This (swindle) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system. The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud. Mr Peabody 0 Posted June 11, 2009 your snopes link has two periods in it. I didn't notice those, I just pasted the email in here, the only links I checked were FBI.gov pages. I'll edit those and take out the extra .'s y'all are welcome. I just don't like to see people taken advantage of, especially the elderly - Like me
Guest Terry Posted June 11, 2009 never got that one before, but I can see how it would catch a few off guard. I keep getting car warranty calls. Finally I told them I don't own a car but they could warranty my wheel chair they hung up and never called back yet.

kenimes 42 Posted June 12, 2009 Not sure, but if anyone calls and asks for my SSN over the phone, I tell them to piss off. If they are persistent and claim to be the president or FBI, I simply make one up. 666-66-666 is a good one to use.
