Rob28x 0 Posted January 10, 2009 Well as I sit here trying to think of a name for my new business venture, I am wondering how you guys came up with the names you have? I have seen several unique and interesting names. I have thought of a few, but they don't really seem to pop.
haumana 1,221 Posted January 10, 2009 I first decided whether or not I wanted a business specific name or a non-specific name. Once that was decided, I narrowed it down to a handful. Then I went hunting for web domain names that were available and squatted on all of them (for 1-year) until I could make my final decision. It also allowed me time to apply for my tax license, business name, and EIN with the Feds. I opted for the non-specific (MidPac Solutions LLC) and worked harder on building my customer base for "branding." It proved to be a good decision since now I can add and remove services at any point in time. I added vinyl just last year, even though I haven't promoted it all that much, I have had a few paying customers and it does make them feel better to know that they are paying a business and not just a "one-man show" or in my case one-woman show. Good luck with your decision. BTW if you want to check on domain availability and/or cheap registration and hosting I high recommend Cyber808.com I use them for all domain and hosting, for myself as well as all my clients. Cheap, reliable, and great service. I couldn't ask for more

KageDesign 3 Posted January 10, 2009 Mine pretty much came from Tenacious D, Jack Black calls his fellow bandmate Kage, because his initials are KG. My initials also KG, and have been nicknamed Kage by some co-workers who love Tenacious D. So I went with Kaged Graphic and Design, I design, and make graphics, simple enough. Benr98 40 Posted January 10, 2009 I wanted our business name to be sortof generic as well....I didn't want it solely for just graphics or promotional items. When creating the name, I figured no matter what we made for someone it was to make some sort of impression (hopefully a good one) hence the name Grand Impressions. Rob28x 0 Posted January 10, 2009 All good points. I am trying to decided if I want people to think of decals when they see the name, or do something more generic. I also want to do shirts in the near future as well though.
Benr98 40 Posted January 10, 2009 Rob, that's why I didn't want to put 'graphics' in my name....for one cause I have a helluva time designing my own... When you get into shirts you are going to love it, MINUS the cost of heat applied vinyl.....but keep a look out for sales on it when you plan on buying a heat press. Good luck with your business name....I'm sure you'll do fine! Jenny
Rob28x 0 Posted January 10, 2009 These are a few quick ones I came up with that I like so far.
Cre8tiveCutter 7 Posted January 10, 2009 Creative Publishing & Crafts was what I chose because I do brochures, invites, biz cards and just about anything else on paper, I also like to scrapbook and make cards and other crafty related things. I had visions of offering scrapbooking classes and card making classes etc and wasnt even thinking about vinyl until i came across a web site offering tshirt biz in a box, i thought hmmm....this might be interesting so i ordered it. I got a itty bitty press ( geoknight) a bunch of hanes white tshirts and some useless software...lol. I then went to a web site to order iron ons, little did i know that the HUGE iron ons i got would challenge me to no end with the itty bitty press i had......I ordered a much larger Mighty Press, and then discovered the world of vinyl, so i had to have a cutter...LOL!! Now you would think that i would have learned my lesson and NOT ordered such a small cutter...but did I?? hell no, I ended up with the roland sticka 12. I had no idea that the vinyl world was so vast and there was sooooo much you could do with it! So here I am, waiting on my 24-25 inch cutter to get here, so i can vinyl till my hears content! LOL!! Oh and while I am doing the brochures, biz cards etc I have yet to do any kind of paper crafting! LOL!! sorry if this is TMI!!! LOL! Renee
Rob28x 0 Posted January 10, 2009 No that's great, its good to hear how people have found ways to expand, it helps give people like me new ideas. Its also nice to hear about things that people wish they would have done different from the start, as it helps keep others from having similar regrets. 2GuysSign 4 Posted January 10, 2009 Here is my Automotive Graphics Company... My cousin helps me run it, but i dont have his name on it as of yet! The bike is one of my friends, we did complete tail light tint and marker light tints! I designed the logo and the site!
Rob28x 0 Posted January 10, 2009 That looks good, do you guys print full color logos for customers or do you have something simpler for advertising decals?
haumana 1,221 Posted January 10, 2009 My first logo was two-color, because I didn't want to pay for four-color business cards. After revamping the logo, It's still mostly two-color, but it does gradient change from one to the other. I'm sure that will be a little pricey when it comes time to make a new set of cards. I also stuck with two basic colors because it helped to work on a basic color theme for my invoices, logo wear, promo items, and web site. I'm sure you'll do great choosing your name. My vote is for Twisted Industries, because I like that it will give you room to "grow" your business without pigeon holing it.
FatDad 2 Posted January 10, 2009 mine came about from my son. When he got his Wii he made me a Wii mii and named him Fat Dad. I do all kinds of different things so i went with Fat Dad Custom Designs
Cre8tiveCutter 7 Posted January 10, 2009 I like the twisted graphix myself because no matter what you do, you will be using graphics I'm sure, so really its not too restrictive I dont think, but do you think people will assume you only do twisted things? LOL!! As in you know weird, twisted things? LOL!!! But in reality, twisted means different things to different folks. I do like it though! Has a nice ring to it, Wonder if that means I'm twisted??? Renee
buddy 7 Posted January 10, 2009 No, Cre8...you aren't twisted OK...maybe we all are in a way cause we have to be to do this stuff Here's what I came up with a while ago and then I changed it to Raptor Graphics and Design but wasn't "feelin it" so I made some others and wasn't "feelin it" either so I went back to my orignal and revamt/tweeked it a bit and Now I am HAPPY. Can't wait to put it on my truck. I have done Graphic Design work for 11 years and created B/C, letter head brochures and logos for business all the time as well Cre8, but that was 9 years ago, so much has changed in terms of Programs. I stopped doing it because I had kids and they took presidence over a career. But now they are getting older so maybe I can scootch back into it...a little rusty though, but Like muscle...the brain has memory! Dazzel
Cre8tiveCutter 7 Posted January 10, 2009 Hey Dazzle, I had to lol at your we must all be twisted in some way. But at least we are in great company...lol. I really like how you placed the and within the other letter, really creative... I really wanted Creative Publishing Unlimited as my biz name but when I went to apply for my licenses thru the state etc, It was against thier rules to use the word Unlimited. I applied for everything online so had to think quick as to what the last word would be. So I'm doing business as Creative Publishing & Crafts, not really happy with it but thats what it is. Cost too much for me to switch it all now <sigh> oh well! I dont have a logo though yet so at least I will be able to jazz it up somehow! Renee
cohesion 0 Posted January 11, 2009 First pet you owned + the name of the street you grew up on... I thought that was for a porn star name...?
cohesion 0 Posted January 11, 2009 I think this is the logo that I'm going to end up using. I don't remember how I came up with the name, it really has nothing to do with design or graphics. It's a science term, I just liked the sound of it. Cohesion. I think that you can make names work for you even if they don't spell out what your company does, plus like some other people said, it gives you room to grow or change what you do. Benr98 40 Posted January 11, 2009 Hey Dazzel, nice job with your logo! I always found making a logo for myself is much harder then helping out a customer!!
Guest kenya Posted January 11, 2009 In my day job, I own a business that we use our last name for. It gives our customers an actual person to relate to. We've been here for 26 years & watched the "catchy" named ones come & go. But with this biz being on the net, that's where you find the catchy ones & it works. I'm in the Tri-County area, where the Suwannee River runs right thru here....... hence, SuwanneeRiverGraphics.com.
Rob28x 0 Posted January 11, 2009 Hey Dazzel, nice job with your logo! I always found making a logo for myself is much harder then helping out a customer!! Yeah tell me about it! I am starting to lean towards: GREAT LAKES SIGN-N-DESIGN or GREAT LAKES SIGN & DESIGN Web address would be either "greatkalessignndesign.com" or "greatlakessignanddesign.com" as both are available. I am decent with the sign part, but still learning the design part haha. But having a hard time coming up with a decent looking but simple logo. Want something that's simple and inexpensive to cut for free stickers to hand out and such. What do you guys think?
Cre8tiveCutter 7 Posted January 11, 2009 looks very nice, I'm not sure though if I would use sign and design or if i would add an s on the end of both words like, signs and designs..... whichever way you go looks good... Renee
buddy 7 Posted January 11, 2009 Thanks Benr98...With Clients I Think it's about what they FINALLY decide on and it's THEIR image they are protraing(we are just getting paid),,, with our image...IT'S EVERYTHING to us so we have to get it PERFECT in our eyes first and we are the creator so it will take FOREVER...it's a "personal bonding" if you will! Just rambling...sorry! :- Dazzel
