Recommended Posts

Guest kenya

I have an annoying pop up. It keeps wanting me to run (install)

Virus Removal 2008. Anyone know what to do to get rid of this?

I have Avast & Ad-ware on my computer and I'm running Vista 32 bit.

This pops up about every 30 seconds.

Any help would be G-R-E-A-T-L-Y appreciated!!!

good to hear that. Not sure I could get close enough anyway. If my belly gets much bigger I'll have to back up to a door to knock on it.

lol.......What's the problem?

well, i have only had it a year, it's a compaq f572us. and of course the warranty just expired. well when u boot the thing it sounds like it doesn't want to catch the hard drive, the screen is black and it was restarting by itself over and over. screen came up normal a couple of times then it started being distorted when it came up then it goes back black. no it has not been dropped or anything. it was working find then i thought it went to sleep mode but look like it went to crazy. i called compaq they said it was the screen. but it's weird.

lol do u have any idea?

have you tried plugging in an external monitor? If you do and all looks normal, probably the screen.

I'd try an external monitor like John said.

If you get nothing with the external...well, it is probably the onboard video card. Even if the hard drive was toast, you should get the boot screen. Try the external and post back.

Does it go through the BIOS startup ok?  Like you get a screen up with how much ram you have and it checks for USB ports ect, then it goes off to boot windows.  If you get that startup screen ok, but it doesn't go onto Windows, you might have the following problems:

1. Hard drive scratched on the boot sector

This is highly unlikely, however 1 in every 100 laptops will suffer this problem.  The possibility does rise if you travel with your laptop.  I know some of you might be thinking "but laptops have anti-vibration protection" however this is only a small fail safe.  From the time the computer has detected the impact of being dropped or even a small shake, the hard drive heads are on the move to "park" themselves.  The platters are still spinning, and I guarrantee the heads still smack down on the platters before getting into the safe zone.

2. Your MBR (Master Boot Record) is semi-corrupt.

Solution for this is fairly simple.  You need to make a DOS boot CD, then copy on a file called "fdisk.exe"  Boot up with the CD, the type in the following: fdisk /mbr

This will repair the master boot record without screwing up any data.  NOTE: If this fails - your hard drive has copped physical damage to that section of the platter, and is unrepairable.

3. Your MBR is corrupt and has physical damage.

Go out, buy a new drive to suit the laptop.  Remove the current drive and place aside.  Insert the new one, load up your OS ect ect.  Go and buy an 2.5 IDE hard drive external enclosure (http://www.bixnet.com/usbporenfor2.html).  Put your old drive in that enclosure, then plug it into your laptop.  Hopefully, you should be able to get a connection - pull all of your data off the drive and dump it into a DIR on your new drive.  Sort through it later - right now, we just wanna get the data.  You may run into corrupt files...don't try to save them, just get off what you can.  Write down the files you can't get, and come back to them later.

I had this problem with my satellite.  we went in and put it in safe mode, then deleted ALL the drivers.  It only took a couple clicks for my computer friend, then restarted it.  When it detected all the hardware and installed all the new drivers, It has worked flawlessly.  Just took a corrupt driver to screw up the whole machine..  I can call my computer guy to see excatly how he did it, or someone on here probably knows.  it worked for me!!

Don't know how I missed this post before now...  You should be able to toggle back and forth between Internal/External monitor by pressing <fn+f4> or <fn+f8> (or <fn+??> -varies by manufacturer) with the computer on and the external monitor connected and powered on.  The FN key usually has blue lettering and the matching F-Key has a small blue graphic representation of a monitor on it (sometimes you have to use your imagination, as the graphical representation can be totally lame.)  Hope your laptop gets better.

No prob Terry, that is one of the best free malware removers I have used.

I would be willing to say that Malwarebytes is the absolute best scanner I've ever used it beats out the competition 99% of the time. These guys are very fast at getting updates when a new virus comes out and its free..Just make sure you run the updates before scanning as automatic updates is reserved for the full version...

I run this program at least once a week.A few other free but effective security programs are..

(These 2 i use with a weekly scan of malwarebytes virus free)

http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en-us/free-upgrade-security-suite-zonealarm-firewall.htm

Also

Remember always a great idea to test firewall with

https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

free or not

And if at all possible use a Dedicated linux box for internet activity and you'll have no worries

Dedicated comp not dual boot due to the possibility of a virus that can't harm a linux distro "unless run in root" crossing to the windows partition.

And to not sound like linux is impervious heres some info

It doesn't seem like a bad idea but I'm not a huge fan of a program that always runs on the comp "backing up" files...I would rather get a reputable data storage company with redundancy on their end and up things myself ...One thing to think about is do you have a monthly cap on your bandwith and how much do you use on a normal basis..No need to have a company's program constantly sending uping data that you don't need.....

http://www.pcworld.com/article/125949/online_storage_extend_your_hard_disk_to_the_web.html

I have no hands on with that service but i feel over automation of things can become sloppy and like to do it myself..

I actually just the other day had my 650gb drive become corrupted and had to format it then used Getdatback and retrieved 95% of my data
