    Finding licensed graphics?~Tow Mater~

My brother works at Disney. I put a Mickey Mouse on a wall mural for my children one time (they were toddlers). My brother and I got to talking about copyrights and he said Disney is extremely aggressive about protecting their copyrighted material. He said they have closed down businesses which have violated their copyrights and will go to great lengths to protect it. I would be extremely surprised if Disney allowed you the use of their character. They don't need the money. It's your call, but I would be VERY careful using their copyrighted material.
  3. I don't worry much about too many things. If you have a good dog, they'll not only warn you of intruders and round up sheep, but they'll also protect your interests and keep you informed. Pictured below is "Foofy", Defender of the Weak, Promoter of Peace and Master of Disguises.

    Barcode39 Font

Does everyone know that a barcode is actually a font? It's called "barcode39" font, and can be downloaded for free all over the internet. It seems to me that since some graphics are nothing more than creative text, the barcode could be used in much the same manner. It can be used with or without the explanatory subtext. i.e.: I'm sure there's a couple billion other creative ways barcode39 font could be used. Just a thought.

Graphic Designer by day, Vinyl Designing by night

That picture was taken at the Smokey Mountain Mansion in Robbinsville, North Carolina. Our car club, RX8 Brotherhood of the Dragon had our first meet there and we rented that place. They still gather up there once a year to challenge Hwy 129, otherwise known as the "Tail of the Dragon". It's an 11 mile mountain road with 318 curves. Car and motorcyle clubs from all over the world visit that area to Challenge the Dragon! It's an amazing drive. I traded the RX8 in on a Mazda3 for my daily drive. Saves me $$ on gas, insurance and car payments. I miss that car, but at least now I can park anywhere at a Wal Mart parking lot without worry about my car getting scratched all the time. The Dragon on the mansion photochopped....

I had a friend do it before I knew anything about vinyl (I still don't know much about it). But I've uploaded a .gif interim and will call him tomorrow to see what he has of it. I believe he cleaned it up a bit before cutting the vinyl to apply to my car. You're welcome to whatever I can get ahold of. 4share http://www.razpewton.com/temp/TREX2.gif

Looks good so far! I like the old style font that looks beaten up a little. Gives it rustic look.

I've had this car up to 142 mph. T-rex vinyl stayed put. Even had some layered vinyl on the front and no problems.

Charlie, I use a Nikon D80. ISO 100, 1/60, F3.5 or ISO 400, 1/60, F4.0. If your flash is bouncing off your subject you could diffuse it with tissue or tracing paper over the flash, unless you can shoot with indirect flash. The shots with a yellow hue are ambient light, no flash. Angled is better than head on.

Good tip, Kev! I'll try that myself next time I blast. The de-masking IS the most laborious task of the whole process. Thanks again!!

Good luck to ya Pro. Here's a few pointers I'll share with you that I've learned over the past few years. Use the vinyl mask for your design, but cover everything else (including the back and bottom) with packing tape. I usually put two layers of packing tape around the immediate blast area and one layer in the non-blast areas (back and bottom). Press out any air bubbles that may appear as you are masking. An air bubble gives the blasting medium a "void" for "blast through", which is to say the grit penetrating the masking to contact the glass, giving you unwanted etching. Hold the nozzle at least 10" to 12" away from the blasting surface. This prevents blast-through. You get the feel of the process with experience. I run 50 to 110 psi on my air compressor. The less pressure, the more passes you'll need to make to achieve the desired reults. For extremely small vinyl pieces, such as the inside of the letter "A, B, P, D", try to blast head on and not from the side. This avoids blowing the tiny pieces off when blasting. I use a rubber printer's roller to press vinyl masking to the surface for a tight adhesive bond and good grip prior to blasting. I always wear a respirator and eye protection (full goggles). The silica dust is nasty stuff and you should avoid breathing it at all costs and keep it away from your eyes. Keep your respirator on when removing finished items or putting more into the blast cabinet. Carefully remove masking and tape after completion. I usually cut an "X" patter across the top of the beer mug mouth, then peel the masking/tape down the mug vertically in quarters. Be sure you don't have any grit under your fingers holding the mugs. Maintain a good gripe on your mug as you are demasking. I've dropped one or two. Broken mugs don't look as nice and hold little beer. I blow off any residual grit after demasking, then spray with alcohol and wipe with a soft, clean rag (cloth diapers are the best). After cleaning, hold up to the light to look for flaws and/or admire your work. Your design will be as detailed as your masking and weeding skills. When I have time, I will try to run finished mugs through the dishwasher for a super clean shine. You may want to purchase a pack of 12" mirrored panels to practice on. Experiment with nozzle angles and blast distances. Completed project should look something like this.... :)

    Whats your workspace look like?

What's the general rule of thumb with respects to image sharing? If the image is presented in .eps format, the poster is okay with sharing the graphic, and if it is posted in .jpg, .gif or .bmp, the poster is simply showing their work? Maybe there should be a little disclaimer indicating "4show" and "4share" or the poster could imply the intent of their posted graphic. I'm not trying to be ignorant and I would never download a graphic unless it was something generic for other uses that I had requested (like a checkered flag or something...). There's a lot of talent on this board and being a newbie I certainly want to understand what's acceptable and what's taboo. Thanks.
