  1. Did you also pre-press the shirt for a few seconds to get the moisture out? I've used shirts from Michaels or JoAnn in a pinch, and those never gave me any problem.

I work with Siser Videoflex Glitter a lot (the local high school drama club wants silver!)... I usually press them at 315F for 20 seconds and cool peel. Never had a single complaint in the last 5 years...

  2. I'm assuming you're talking about layering for cut vinyl... You can insert your own manual registration marks (I use diamonds) and place them at the corners of your design. For every color, cut the diamonds as well, and match them up after everything is cut and weeded.

  3. I haven't had my printer long enough to do most of the maintanance on it yet.

Swap 1-2x per week, depending on usage

Wipers and cap tops - replaced 6 months after I got the printer (part of the 1 yr service contract from the dealer - bought a demo unit from them)

Heads - dealer put in new printheads before delivery, so ~8 months

Haven't done anything else with my printer - I'm sure I'll be asking questions when I need to replace more stuff

  4. I heard from someone that you can print on Oraguard laminating film. I was wondering if anyone here has tried it? Rarely I would get a request for printing on transparent vinyl... if I can print on the laminate with same results, I may do that instead of buying a roll of transparent that doesn't get used much.

    Thanks!

  5. Adding to this - I've done about a year of research before I bit the bullet and bought one. I have a VersaCamm SP300i. It was a dealers demo with very low hours on it, and I also purchased a 1-yr service contract with it, which also included delivery/installation and on-site training.

For $6000, you may be able to get a 30" printer (I paid almost $7500 for mine) - but if you're wanting to do car wraps, I think you'll need a larger printer than that.

As far as getting the printer, I have no regrets. Being able to offer full color printing is a big plus for my customers and a chance for me to get back all the customers that I lost when some guy bought a cheap cutter and underpriced me (although from what I hear, there's a huge difference in quality). For decals, I'm definitely not complaining about the lack of labor involved compared to weeding vinyl.

  6. The OP asked about decals and car graphics..All of which can be done with and without lam for sure..I agree on the total car wrap being the best to lam to make it longer life...I am not into the wraps as you are and most definitly agree with doing it right the first time for something with as much at stake as a wrap..

Hope the OP understands a wrap is different from a window decal in how it's approached and installed...

I still don't see how vehicle graphics can be "professional" if it's printed on a dye ink printer. It needs to be laminated for it to be colorfast when it's exposed to all the elements, and with lamination, it'll be too thick to be applied to a vehicle even if it's just a decal... just a thought...

  7. You could probably get away with using Oracal 651 for windows if you want to save a few bucks. I've had a few on my truck for at least 4-5 years now that's been through extreme weather (-20 degrees to 112) every year.

As for transfer tape, I use both Maintape and R-Tape.

  8. There are a lot of aftermarket ink out there that are pigment ink, depending on what printer you use. If you use an Epson printer, chances are, you can get your ink through cobraink. Lots of members on this forum use them with great success for t-shirt transfers.

I'd be careful when it just say "universal" because it doesn't specify if it's dye or pigment, and dye ink has a tendency to fade after washing.
