  1. For practice, you'll need a roll of vinyl (I use oracal), application tape, and a spreader. Oh, and don't forget a bubble popper tool and an exacto knife. You're gonna love it. It's addicting.

Do any of you all use these blades?

Okay, with Christmas holidays coming up and all the work I'm doing with small letters for tiles and coasters, I had to order a 60 degree blade for my Pcut. Besides, I'm now doing work with the blackboard tile and that stuff is thick! Will let you guys know how I like it for that stuff.

What kind of vinyl do you use?

ORACAL Tried some cheaper brands from Ebay in the beginning. Not good.

    Here is Houndstooth....

Thanks for the houndstooth. I sell tons of Alabama/Auburn/Tennessee stuff. Mine are mostly tags and coasters, but I'm now doing stick figures, too. I'm thinking a houndstooth hat on one of them will go over great around here. Carol

    Lock, key or locksmith?

Thanks for posting the keys. I've been looking for a locksmith's safe (thank you gift to the friendly locksmith next door to my store) but hadn't found a decent one. I think I can do something nice with these keys, though. Carol

    Bartering?

I get my hair done ($120 for cut/color) every 8 weeks and haven't paid cash in 8 months. She likes lots of my stuff and I'm more than happy to barter.

    Thinking about closing down

Don't get depressed. You've got far too many avenues to explore. There's a world of possibilities when it comes to vinyl. It's like others have said, though; you just gotta find your niche. And of course, it doesn't take too many jobs to make your money back at the prices we paid for our equipment. I bought my 1st cutter 15 months ago and my second one 3 months ago. Business is good once you find your sweet spot....

    Wall Art Advice Needed Please

When it's a new customer who has never applied vinyl wall art before, I like to give them a small practice sample along with instructions. This way they get a feel for what works before applying the one they paid for.

    video on youtube

It's been super busy around here and I don't get to check in with this board as often as I'd like, but I do peek in most weeks. With 2 stores, I've been swamped. The good news is that the "wall words" have done so well for me that I've just bought a second cutter. In fact, on my latest commercial for my consignment store, I featured the wall graphics pretty heavily. I'm crossing my fingers they'll do the trick and bring me lots more new customers for the vinyl. I really wanted to pop in to say thanks to all of you who've taught me so much. Without all of your freely shared tips and info, I'd never have done this well with them. I uploaded the commercial to youtube and here's the link in case anyone wants to see it. Thanks again, Carol

How Many People Here Make Signs Full Time? Storefront? Work From Home?

I own an antique mall and a consignment shop. I do this pretty much full-time out of the consignment shop and am setting up to do the same in the antique mall. So, it's kinda "full time" and kinda "not".

    Day Job

I own 2 small businesses; an antique mall and a boutique consignment shop. I stumbled into this about a year ago when I was looking to order more vinyl signs for my 1st store. And of course, that led to wanting quotes for the walls in my house. Started looking at the cricut machines at Walmart and almost bought one a couple of times, but hesitated until I finally found these machines. In the beginning, I couldn't justify the expense. But it finally dawned on me that if I liked them so much, others would too - and I had the built-in advantage of a steady traffic flow already. Now, the "wall words" part is a growing part of business. Brings me new customers all the time.

Tiles How well are they selling?

I sell lots of tiles out of my store, more than regular wall words, for sure. I stayed late tonight to complete several wall word orders, as well as 3 sets of monogram coasters, 1 "welcome" tile, and some 6" x 6" tiles. These were ordered over the last few days. My prices are cheap, though. 6" x 6" with a simple quote for as little as $10 and only $12 for a set of 4 monogram coasters. If they want something more detailed or creative, the price can go up, of course. Carol

tiles and coasters have been selling great

http://picasaweb.google.com/Logston.Roger.Carolane/MONOGRAMS# I hope the link works. I've been doing loads of personalized tiles and coasters so put a few pics up on Picasa. (Yea, I know there's some extra stuff on there but I'm too tired to take those pics down right now.) Carol

tiles and coasters have been selling great

Yea, those irregular-edged, tiles are some of the best sellers here. The granite tiles are pretty popular for modern kitchens, though. Most of the easels in these photos came from a local shop and I got a great deal on them ($3-$5 ea.), but I've also found some pretty good buys at Hobby Lobby. Just gotta wait for them to be 1/2 price to make them affordable - but seems Hobby Lobby does that every few weeks. Congrats on getting the stores to take your tiles. This should be great for the both of you, because they are honestly worth more than I'm selling them for. I"m just a sucker for the quick cash so I price them cheap. Carol

tiles and coasters have been selling great

Thanks, guys, I buy the tiles at Lowe's and they cost between $.32 each (coaster size), up to $6.50 each for the 18" ceramic tiles. My average price is less than $1.50 each for the 12" ceramic tiles and I sell those for around $14 each. For the granite tiles ($5.50 each), I start at $24 and the larger ceramic tiles start at $28. I just finished 3 more of those for one customer. They make great family or housewarming gifts. Carol
