  1. I've used and like FontForge. But as of last year, the newer version ated 7-31-2012 had a serious flaw that caused crashes. I had to use the version dated 02-22-2011. Still has a bug or two but worked fine for me.

  2. Your error states you have a Prolofic chipset interface. FTDI drivers won't help at all!

First off, in windows 8 (and 7), the computer will automatically update these drivers to the latest version. Sometimes that's bad thing! If your interface uses a knock-off chipset, the newer drivers won't work with it. Prolific did that purposefully. From other sources, you need no newer than version 3.2 of the Prolific drivers to make it work with your computer. There is a way to turn off the automatic driver updating bu I don't recall it right now. That might be your problem...

  3. passed my general license test this morning yippee

    Congrats!!! ;D:bear:

Now get some gear and get on HF.. Michigan might be difficult to reach from here, maybe on 20 or 40 meters. But the rest of the world is out there waiting to hear from you!

  4. my woes went away when I stopped shaving altogether.

This is me 3 years ago. It has grown quite a bit since then.

Nice to see a real beard now and then! Mine may be a bit longer, but it's at least 40 years old. Oddly enough, it doesn't seem to want to get any longer? Maybe I reached my limit?

And no, I'm not posting a pic of it!:bear::lol:

  5. That's the plan. I bought the bigger antenna he suggested although not the cable connection at this point. I plan to listen in while I work on my license.

After going through it, I would suggest studying for both the Tech and General tests. The General really isn't much harder than the tech and if you pass that, you can get on HF and talk all over the world. Well worth the investment, except I doubt you'd find a $30 HF radio :bear:

  6. As a licensed ameteur, all I can say is do not transmit with it! That can be set by programming with the Chirp software.

I have 3 and love them. First one finally broke after almost 3 years of pretty good abuse. I prefer to use BNC connectors for the antenna and the adapters are cheap and easy to come by.

If you have a friend that is a Ham, buy the book, spend a couple months studying it and then get your Tech license. It's worth it and a lot of fun!

  7. Are you referring to the adhesive vinyl or the HTV that US Cutter sells?  I had no problems cutting the HTV...

The adhesive vinyl. Don't remember which brand though. I bought a few feet to make a wall decoration for my daughter. Toughest stuff I've ever seen.

  8. I don't know if anyone else has cut the glow vinyl, but I did a couple years ago. Very difficult. The stuff was many time thicker and tougher than any other vinyl I have cut, had trouble tracking in the cutter and really neede two passes. Luckily I was only doing a circle of it. Also don't know if they're making it thinner now, but thought I would mention my troubles with it...

  9. If you can pass the Tech, General is not all that difficult, but there are things you have to remember from the book. Well worth it though. I did manage to talk all over the world on 10 meters with my Tech, but with a General I can do it just about any time I'm in the mood instead of waiting for just the right conditions.

Maybe we can get a vinyl net going on HF so we can actually talk to each other?:bear:

  10. just took my technicians test cold yesterday - anyone on here into it?  sure the radio will take a couple weeks to get here.

Congrats on that! :bear:  I hope you move on to General to hit the HF instead of just local repeaters. For the money, Baofengs can't be beat. Been using one for years. Now I'm using the second one :lol:

    Yes, also a Ham... :ph34r::bear:

  11. zip (compress) your file and then upload it. Do you use this computer for anything else? Had any problems with other software? Hard drive and power suppply problems first show up with corrupted files! Worth looking into.

I would be the last person to defend Scap as I got ripped off on version 3 which they never got to work and then they wanted money for version 4 which seems like yet another Beta release. So even though your probelm is probably with Scalp, it's worth checking your computer just in case...

  12. I could never get the scalp3 corel->scalp plugin to work here at all. And I really never got scalp3 to work acceptably and refuse to waste more money on beta testnig scalp4...

So I design in Corel, export as eps and import into Signblazer. Works fine for me but I don't do 'production'...

  13. And you guys feel safe and secure having your important files "saved" on some unknown "cloud" computer's hard drive at some unknown location serviced by some minimum wage geek who could care less???:wacko::huh:>:D:bear:

I'll stick to local storage that I can control and know who has eyes on it thank you very much!

  14. What did you change your cutter to in SB?

If you have the original Laserpoint (not the 2), then you would select the Creation P-Cut CT as your cutter. The numbers after the "CT" such as '900' are the size (width) of the cutter. If you have the 24", select the CT630.

    See if that fixes things...

  15. If you can hold and hear the drive when you power it up, it will start with the whiring sound of the disk spinning up. Then some clicks as it moves the head assembly to locate sector zero. If you don't hear/feel this, your SOL. If it whirls and then keeps cliking, that's the "click of death", no sector zero. Your SOL...

Recover companies can actually remove the plater from your drive and place it into another drive to recover data. That's why it's expensive and comes with no guarantees. There are many such companies and you can get prices from them.

A trick or two used over the years...

Place the drive in the freezer for an hour, then try to fire it up. Sometimes works.

Place the drive in a 140 degree oven for a half hour, then try to fire it up. Sometimes works...

Disclaimer: I've never used the oven trick and am only guessing at the temperature. 140 degrees should be safe for any electronic device and is the low side of most ovens. My "heat" is to leave the drive running for a few hours in a USB enclosure with no venting...

My experience: It will either work cold, or left running and hot for a few hours and then "re-booted" or reconnected such as with an external USB enclosure. If it won't fire up with either the cold or hot state, it's toast and only a recovery company could have any luck with it.

    Good luck!
