Definition of Registration Marks

Sorry, newbie here.  Can someone give the definition of registration marks, i.e., why they are used, when you should use them and how to use?  Thanks so much for your help!

they are used to line up layers when you are doing multi color graphics.

if you are using SBE you have to manually make them.

to do this

use the square tool and draw 2 small squares one on each corner make sure they are in a different color from the rest of the graphic. now when you go to cut the graphic on the right side of the page you will see the different colors of your graphic. click the layer you want to cut. then press and hold the control button on your key board  and click the color of you registration marks. do this for all the colors you want to cut. now when you layer them just line up the registration marks.
