Here is what I want to do.  If its possible can someone explain the steps?  I can't seem to figure out how to do it.

In the attached image I want to punch through the red letters where they cover the fish.  I understand how to do that.  then I want to keep the red letters and acorns outside of the fish and make them black so that the combination of white and black makes the letters readable.  Does this make sense.  To summarize it, how do I keep the font outside of the fish, or even make it an outline of the letter so that it is readable.  Hope that makes sense

Try using the combine function, it will give you something like what you want.
