What is the best way to line up

What is the best way to line up a message on a street sign or window on a store front?  I've been lucky doing it by sight but there is bound to be a way that is easier.

Measuring tape and painters tape and/or stabilo pencils... also, wet application method.

Laser level!, you can get one for about $5 it wont be the best, but it will definatly get the job done.
