mac6986 93 Posted June 23, 2010 not sure where to put this question, so ill stick it here. ok, got a guy, bought a boat, wants the old name taken off and new vinyl name put on. its paint of some sort, not sure if its automotive grade or what, but is on a fiberglass door and its fairly faded and weathered. question is whats the best way to remove the paint without damaging the fiberglass under it? also what vinyl do you think would stand up the best to direct sunlight all day and salt water? Dakotagrafx 7,297 Posted June 24, 2010 I would CAREFULLY try lacquer thinner to remove the old paint from fiberglass - then go with a cast Oracal for the redo! Be prepared the are under the old graphic will probably be a lot whiter than the surrounding area
tinaski 11 Posted June 24, 2010 We did that once - once now we have a form that we use that just says we will remove old vinyl or paint but any damage that is cause because of paint or vinyl that wasn't applied by us isn't our responsibility if there is damage

midwaste 4 Posted June 24, 2010 If the lacquer thinner doesn't work, it will probably have to be sanded off. I'd use 600 grit followed by 1000. You are probably going to have to do this anyway, to get the hellcat to an even color.. Follow up with rubbing compound with a buffer.
