How do I build my own tape applicator?
express2100 replied to jonvince's topic in General discussion
-jonvince, if I remember correctly it's better to have the tape closer to the table. Nice functional design but you might want to drop it about three inches. -
pricing?
express2100 replied to Spunky.Fresh.Designs's topic in Business Practices, Sales and Pricing, etc.
Trade outs are great! I've received a few cases of brew for next to nothing. -
I like the price. If he's a friend or wants more work in the near future I might cut it down a bit. I don't know about the rest of you but I wouldn't want it in my shop even if my name was Hart. NO offense if it's your design DNA!

The body lines on a 98 chevy are not parallel and my decals appear crooked. The body lines run further apart as you go towards the rear. If I follow the top line it appears to rise in the rear. Follow the bottom line and it appears to drop in the rear. I taped them on the truck in both positions but my eye said "they are crooked dummy". It was late so I walked away and this morning I had a thought... When laying down fairly large decals (mostly lettering) between the body lines; would it be best to locate the center in the front and rear of the vehicle, connect the two points and center the decals on that line? For reference:

All done! Followed the center line and everything looks great but I have to admit I wasn't sure it would when I was laying it out. My OCD just about killed me. Guess I'm too dang picky. One more lesson learned. Hopefully I can retain the info long enough to complete truck #2 tomorrow. Thanks again guys!

How do I build my own tape applicator?

I have that ordway tapemate. It's all I know so nothing to compare it to. I used poster shipping tubes from office max and cut to 26". They are thin wall (maybe .060) which is fine but the rear tube fits so tight that it split the tube ends when I installed it. The front one fits loose and rolls nice but the back stays put. I guess it's designed that way to keep the tape roll from moving until you want it to?? I'd like to find some thicker wall paper core tubes and see if it improves at all. Otherwise I'll look for another unit altogether. -
That is the line I originally used and it looked best but not perfect. I will lay everything out again tonight and see how it looks. Thanks guys!

Anyone familiar with pond5 ? I can't seem to make heads or tails of their licensing policies and my rights? Basically I want to purchase a vector for use on a mechanics sign but I can't seem to locate the license info be certain I can legally do so. Most other sites have "standard" or "expanded" license options right at checkout. If anyone knows or has a spare minute to check it out and help clarify I would really appreciate it. This image is not available anywhere else at a price I can afford. (15x the price) Here is a link to a different image: https://www.pond5.com/illustration/16069291/retro-car-white-background-vector-illustration.html

Anyone else able to make sense of this? I know the NOOB is pouring off of me here!! I simply want to purchase a vector, cut the decal and place it on a business sign. -
Poor site indeed. I wouldn't have known they sold coro if you didn't mention it. How many other products are not listed on their site?

Thanks guys! It's just not as clear as it is on other sites. The logo use does get tricky as well. Recreating something similar would be ideal but I'm not sure I am capable. I'll sleep on it..... -

I've been wondering how this was coming along. "services of any kind"...... ah so you're a John and this is your cover? Lose the roller and get yourself a Wagner Sprayer. The paint will lay flatter and so will your vinyl. Plus the sprayers come in handy around the house. Also you just HAVE to get a loud speaker for that thing!! ......Is it a taco truck? .....Is it an ice cream truck? .....nope it's Slice & Dice Decals rollin through the hood!!! :) I got some decals and you don't got none! Want a see?......SIEK! Oh man my gut is killin me I'm laughing so hard!!

What percent mark up are you all putting on painted aluminum blanks? I've been rolling out a few of these and want to make sure my mark up is fair for both parties. Thanks ......Mark up on materials is a tough one for me.....I hate the idea of overcharging good folks!

Aluminum Blanks
express2100 replied to express2100's topic in Business Practices, Sales and Pricing, etc.
I do price shop but they are not going to tell me what their mark up is. Sure I can break it down and take a guess but I have no idea what their costs are per blank. just thought you guys used a set % -

So a set markup % is not the norm? Seems like an easy route for a starting point at least. I understand this is personal but I could really use some guidance in this area. PM me if you don't want to post it. I obviously want to make a nice profit without pricing myself out of the market. What I absolutely do NOT want to be is one of these price choppers hacking the market to bits just to make a sale and devalue the industry. -

How accurate is the info in the Signwriters & SignCraft guides? As a new shop would they be worth having one around? -
