  1. good work how did you get the points to line up so nice? (haha)

Made 2 registration marks up top and lined them up, not so easy to do with normal application tape. I should order my clear app tape soon... got another band interested in the same work...

  2. Great post!

Anyone know a distributor for the mactac?

    Thank you thank you

    Thomas

    Laird Plastics - 214-350-3990

    Fellers - 888-863-8383

Huh....not finding it in the fellers catalog......I'll have to call em bout it.

That info is directly from Mactac's Rep, she gave me the numbers

  3. So there has been a few discussions on here about printing on vinyl and there have been mixed answers, yes/no/sometimes/if you stand on one leg and rub your head and belly. So here is my post on the subject, hopefully this will clear up some of the questions out there.

I ordered my Epson Workforce 1100 CIS with Pigment Ink a couple days ago, got it in, set it up. Mactac's representative was nice enough to send me a small roll of their JT1958 Printable Vinyl with Permanent Adhesive. Sihl was also nice enough to send over a couple of 8x10's of their Synthetic Polypro Film with EasyTack - 13 mil - matte 3539 and Tornado Outdoor Self Adhesive Vinyl - 12 mil - matte 3175.

    Mactac:

Their product came in a nice tight roll, which was impressive but not the best thing for trying to print on the Epson 1100. I had to roll it backwards to try to straighten it and feed it into the printer properly after cutting them into 13x36" strips. It printed cleanly and was dry within seconds of exiting the printer. Being that it was a matte finish, I coated the vinyl with some FrogSpit that I ordered from the SignWarehouse last week. It dried to a satin to semigloss finish, what I was looking for. The vinyl is thick enough to not tear easily and light enough to see the design through with some back lighting.

    Sihl:

Now Sihl didnt send a big roll over to test, just a couple of sheets which is good enough to get a feel for their product. First the 3175, this product is similar to mactac's where the face is a matte coating for the inkjet. It printed cleanly and dried quickly but decided to not use FrogSpit on these just because they were tests. I assume the same results the mactac had would be present here. The 3539 vinyl on the other hand is clear and has a pattern to the face, seeing as how it didnt have a matte coating as the 3175 the ink printed oddly and did not dry quickly. Overnight the ink was still not dry and still smears, leading to not being able to use this product for any sticker/banner work without some type of drying system.

Images of products and results are linked within the text.

    [uPDATE]

I have been using the Sihl 3988 since running out of the mactac sample material and have been satisfied with it more so than mactac's product. The material is thicker, making it sit flatter and easier to load into this picky printer. The backing is blank so I an stamp my own logo/contact info on each sticker for future business. I was also able to find the Sihl locally and not the mactac, this is the main reason to switch over to this brand, but after trying it, I will definitely be sticking with Sihl 3988.

(Also would like to thank Reece Supply for being able to get me these products the same day or next day for wholesale prices)

  4. You need to specify what settings you are printing at, I have modified drivers for my workforce 1100 and can print at the highest quality on that exact same vinyl (trimmed to fit into the printer) and cant see any dots from printing

  5. Alright I got my Cobra 1100 today, along with the Mactac sample and printed up some stickers for a local band. Sealed them with some frog juice and they are amazing, they are thicker and flexible, they dont tear and I assume are waterproof. I'll take some photos of them tomorrow to show you all.

Also my samples of Sihl's stuff is here, but not what I wanted... I'm assuming the mactac stuff is the same as sihl so yea.

  6. Pressure...so apply more pressure?  With my Sunie I still can't get it to lock down and stay so I've just been holding it down.  Will looking into that.

oh yea its not locking down so its only about 1/3rd the pressure so it wont bind into the material just sit on top, once it dries out it will flake

  7. Get the affordable MH Refine series, they are a great learning cutter, get ahold of a copy of illustrator or use something similar with signcut. I have the 36" but I only use 24" vinyl, so a 24" cutter will be fine. Right now im using 3M because its what my local supplier has but I will be switching over to Oracal 651, it will be perfect what you need it for.

You say you will only be doing 3 or 4 cars, but you will get the hang of it and realize you can do a lot of work

I got my cutter on ebay for $330 from uscutter's account, $100 less than listed on the site so I'm sure you can find a good price.

  8. need to fill in a few things that dont cut right.  its for a trailer decal.

you need to specify exactly what you need to edit, maybe show an example of the image or something...

  9. Print out the jpg version. Trace the image with a shrapi pen/marker. Scan the traced image back into your computer. Import into Inkscape. Convert to eps format. Done.

Or just learn the pen tool, it is amazing when you get the hang of it. Sometimes its even easier to redraw it than try to live trace or vector trace it.

  10. What transfer material do you all recommend for doing tshirts, White image on black Gildan 100% cotton.

I got the sample of SISER EasyWeed and it was rather easy to use with my very old Roach heat press.

I noticed that signwarehouse carries a lot of different materials but I have only tried the siser easyweed.

  11. Yeah, the only thing that makes me nervous about that sihl stuff is it says quantity limited at the bottom...as if they aren't going to sell it once out of stock.  I like to commit to products I know will be around if at all possible.

My local distributor sells the SIHL and has alot in stock, they are Reese Supply, they are located in these areas
