    Inkscape and making .dxf files

So I need some specific help that involves inkscape and cutting machines! I have a silhouette cameo and my software can open .dxf files as cutting files. So I would like to be able to convert my design files, usually .jpeg and .png fiiles to .dxf files and have them open in my software. I have tried to convert my files to .dxf and it does it but then when I go to open that file in my cameo software it doesn't open and it doesn't work. So I am figuring I am not converting the file to .dxf correctly. Can anyone help me with this? What does my starting file need to be? An outline? and image? a .jpeg or a .png?? And then what setting do I need to have to convert it? Any help is greatly appreciated!
