Why is my maker trying to cut larger than the page size

I got my new Cricut Maker, and I'm super excited to make some die-cut stickers. I'm printing the stickers on matte sticker paper and cutting them in the maker. I can upload my image, and set it up, no problem. I have to move the image to the top left and resize to 8.5 x 11". But then when I click Make it, the Mat page shows the image resized for a 12x12 canvas. When I cut, it cuts too large, as though I were using a larger piece of paper. I'm completely mystified. This doesn't make any sense to me. What am I doing wrong?

We do not use Cricuts  here, We mostly use full size vinyl cutters.  Check out the forum for Cricut cutters, somewhere online and look up how to use your software.
