Just got back from a local embroiderer, and I've come to the conclusion; if you want it done right, do it yourself. The work looked decent ( the sample anyway) but the digitizing fees are outrageous. Plus there is a 7-14 day turnaround on an order of 3 hats and a messenger bag......

Just a bit dissapointed as I have previously used this company in the past with great results.

And it's because of this that I am looking for a used embroidery machine..... anyone got a cheap one laying around that will do hats as well as the flat stuff? Or even know where to get one?

You may be able to find a used Brothers PR-series for around $2500-3000. A decent digitizing software will run you another $1000.

Call SWF, Brothers, or Toyota. You can check out an ISS show. They have several vendors in attendance. There's one in AC this weekend. They have shows throughout the US every few months.

I've seen people selling them on Craigslist too.

I have a brother pr-620 and have our own digitizing software. Their is a big learning curve when it comes to digitizing. Easy logos are pretty simple. Complex logos are a pain. Small letters are hard to do also. Be prepared to do a lot of practicing. We don't charge for digitizing unless I can't do it. The other problem with digitizing is most of the machines after the design is done won't let you enlarge or shrink them very much. Then you have to re-digitize it. Time consuming.

Good luck.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I am still in the market for a machine, but I may look inot getting financing on a new one (bends over and grabs ankles*) I didfind some freeware digitizing software that I haven't go a chance to play with too much yet, but I did 2 samples and sent to my contract embroiderer, and she had no problems with the files.... so yea. If anyone is interested in the software, I found it here:

http://freesierrasoftware.com/stitch_era_universal.asp

they also have another program that lets you show a design on a 3D rendered garment so you can show the customers. Got that too, but haven't even opened it to install it yet. Sound like a great concept if it does what it says it will. that can be found here:

http://freesierrasoftware.com/stitchandprint.asp

If this software lives up to what it says it does, this will be great.

I hope this helps someone else out too.
