Pigment vs Dye Based Ink

Recommended Posts

Ok, I'm all confused here.  Can anybody explain the differences between the two and what I can and can not print on with them?  Like shirts, mugs etc...

Thanks!

Jay

Both pigment and dye ink are waterbased ink. Pigment ink is more waterfast on most media making it more water resistent. Dye ink tends to run when it gets wet. Pigment ink is also more resistent to fading and has a longer life cycle. Dye ink is usually more vibrant in color.

If you're printing on vinyl, both will require a coated media. T-shirt transfers - pigment is preferred as dye may fade after washing. Mugs - you'll need sublimation - so no on dye or pigment.
