Pulling In vinyl when starting cut

When I start my cut on vinyl sometimes it will suck the vinyl in about 4-5" but sometimes it wont. So I am having to leave it hanging out some and it is creating a lot of waste. And a couple of times it has pulled all the vinyl back in like it would have sucked up about 2' and then start cutting on nothing.

Is this normal or is there a setting I need to change?

Sounds like to me you are not getting your origin points set up correctly.  What cutting software are you using?

Are you setting the origin point on the machine by taking the machine offline...moving the blade where you want to start, then hitting origin?
