  1. Hey guys, I'm coming from a Graphtec which used to set itself at the origin very quickly if I just pulled the release lever for the vinyl. Does anyone know how to get the machine to set itself at the origin and automatically measure the vinyl? Also, are you able to turn smoothing off through the Roland Cutstudio software? I can't see it anywhere but on the device.

    Thanks!

  2. Thanks for your replies guys. I've actually taken that cutter back since I was having some issues with it (not related), but I do have a Roland GS24 on the way and since I may experience the same problems I think it's worth experimenting a bit. Here's an image from AI when I go to save the file as an EPS - http://postimg.org/image/vn2hrwwph/ - Anything here relevant?

I'll give Signcut and Signblazer a go, thanks :)

  3. Roland is another good name brand. You will be happier with the 24"machine anyway.

Yeah, I'm hoping it cuts detail as well as the Graphtec did (aside from the hang nails on circles). I would have gone for the larger Graphtec model but the experience yesterday put a very sour taste in my mouth which is a shame. Graphtec themselves were brilliant when I visited them - they did umm and ahhh over some of the cuts they made with my machine though. Their machine did something very similar but to an unnoticeable degree unless viewed under their microscope (no really, they let me have a look at the cuts under a microscope!).

I bought the smaller Graphtec since I wasn't entirely sure whether I'd enjoy all of this, but I'm loving it so I've gone for a bigger model with less limitations! :)

  4. Ended up taking it back today and getting a refund after I noticed a big scratch running down the length of the copper tube under the cover, in addition to the damaged bearing. The company I bought it from tried to deny that this was a defect which made the experience quite unpleasant, and kept complaining about the loss of the £700 on the unit.. I was absolutely disgusted and the experience sadly put me off buying from them. Just want to make it clear that this was NOT Graphtec, but a retailer here in the UK. They actually refused to exchange it for another one stating that I would be unhappy with the new unit and it would be no better and that they didn't want to lose money on another machine. I found their attitude to be very unprofessional. They also claimed that the cuts were within tolerance which may be fair enough, but one employee at Graphtec did state that the cuts weren't up to standard.

Another customer in their shop even remarked that they were being unfair.

Decided to go for a slightly bigger Roland GS24 which I've ordered online this time.

  5. Ah sorry I should have been clearer. I've been saving it as an EPS from AI and then opening it through Graphtec Studio. Copy and pasting it in AI effectively seems to take a screenshot of it in AI and paste it with no line information etc, and the image isn't vectorised so blowing it up in scale makes a horrible result :( Sadly Studio won't take an SVG file. I did play about in the options earlier and there were some relating to turning lines into polygons which I turned off, but unfortunately it didn't have any effect. Do you know of any other free cutting programs I can download to try it out in them? I get the same result through cutting master too sadly.

    Thanks again for your replies!

  6. Thanks for the responses. Exporting the file as a DXF in AI makes the result much better on the larger designs BUT strangely when I bring the size down in Graphtec Studio the design looks awful.. very odd!! Will have a try of what's suggested here, thanks!

Happens with all fonts and designs whenever they're exported from AI as EPS files.

This doesn't happen in AI, only in Studio.

Thanks for the detailed response david.. I see now what is happening. Any idea what I could do to work around this? I like Studio because it's very simple!

  7. Ok guys, I've had a quick look under the cover for the head unit/whatever it's called and I've noticed one of the plastic covers for the bearing has a slight crack in it and is moving slightly when I push the blade up and down. It's the bearings on the shaft near the blade, just hidden by the cover.

Any tips? Should I go back to the shop and get a replacement? I'm not entirely sure how I would go about telling them I took the cover off to find it out.. as it voids the warranty right? Either way it shouldn't be like that.

  8. I'm not familiar with AI but when you save the file as an EPS, is the lettering being saved as a font, or as a path? I suspect it's being saved as a path, and if so I would assume there is a setting someplace to improved the font to path conversion, or just keep it as a font.

If you could post the eps, and the ai version of the file I'm sure someone here can point to what needs to be done.

Thanks for the reply - here is the EPS - http://www.filedropper.com/mcmpart1 and here is the AI - http://www.filedropper.com/mcmpart1_1

What I have found is that blowing the image up to a massive scale in AI and then importing it in EPS format into Graphtec Studio produces much better results in Studio... any ideas?

  9. Does your software have an over cut option? I've seen reference to some software on here, basically when cutting a path it instructs the machine to go slightly past the start point when it comes around so that there is a bit of an overlap on the start/stop point.

Yep it does, however it seems to draw in a straight line from where it ends rather than following the curvature of the design.. hmmm

It's not a characteristic of the machine, when mine does it is because of the font. Circles U's etc cut just fine.

I'd do a hard reset on your machine. Turn power off, hold down the "up" arrow button (^) and turn the power on while holding the button.  NOVRAM will begin and just follow the queues.

And try cutting it again, if that doesn't work call customer service at Graphtec.

Done several resets and it produces the same results, thanks though!

a, e, o, and g all cut fine in Arial at 0.25" for me. With my old value cutter I was careful on which direction I weeded the insides of those letters. I would try to spot the pigtails and weed with it instead of against it, so not to tear. An xacto knife was needed sometimes to correct parts that the cutter messed up on.

Thank you for trying this! Without trying to offend, are you absolutely positive there's not even a tiny imperfection in the font? What I'm talking about here is absolutely tiny in all fairness.

  10. I physically went in person to Graphtec UK today since they're close to me. We tested the machine and it's working normally according to them. They had another unit set up and trialled the same fonts at the same sizes and it produced EXACTLY the same results as my unit... the only way I can get around having the tiny hang nails is doing 2 passes.. so that's what I'll do I think!

  11. Hey guys, probably posting a bit too much here but I'm running into a lot of issues being a newbie! When I drag the EPS for this file in from AI, the lines are jagged around my text when blown up in scale - this is how it prints too which is a HUGE issue. In Illustrator the lines are perfectly smooth. Does anyone know how to get them smooth?

This happens with ALL fonts, even the standard ones such as Arial and Times New Roman when made in graphtec studio.

    Thanks!!

  12. Just like to add that even when I trace the image in Graphtec Studio the result is still the same.. which makes me think it isn't the font. The test cuts are perfect, anything straight is absolutely great, and some Os are fine, others aren't, even if they're the same font, size and everything.

edit* here's the file http://www.filedropper.com/tswest15x7 (graphtec studio file) or the AI file - http://www.filedropper.com/tswest

  13. Using Graphtec studio - completely new to this. Learned a bit about different blades and the various options for the machine though. All settings are stock currently aside from the cutting force - I have it at 8, the speed which I have at 5cm/s and the step size which I have at 0.1mm. Since you've noticed it on yours too, would you say it's simply a characteristic of the machine? I'm not sure what exactly to expect from a machine like this since I have no experience!

  14. Thanks for the reply - it does cut very well otherwise, it's just the rings and 0s gs etc that it sometimes has problems with. It's not hugely noticeable but it is there, however when I make 2 passes it's perfect aside from a slight overall degradation of quality. It seems to me like it's not completely reaching the start point of the cut on the rings, hence it's fine with 2 passes.

Anyone with a Graphtec CE-6000 have any ideas? Does your cutter do this?

I actually have a 60 degree blade on the way so will give it a go when it arrives. Do you know what the offset should be for 60 degrees?

    Cheers!

  15. Hello, new to cutting and new to the forum! :)

Bought myself a Graphtec 6000-40 and I've noticed that I'm getting some very small hang nails on some of the smaller letting, but only where there is a circular shape.

I'm using the stock 45 degree blade and I've played around with the settings a bit, but the only way I can completely get rid of them is to make 2 passes of whatever I'm cutting. It's almost as though the blade JUST stops short of where it's supposed to. Quality wise, everything is superb and I'm very happy. Just wanted to know if this is normal or not. I've read of several other people with the Graphtec 6000 cutters having this happen.

2 passes fixes the hang nail problem but the quality of the work overall is very slightly diminished as far as I can tell.

Can anyone confirm this is ok? I'm working with lettering around about 7mm in diametre. Thanks!

  16. Hey guys. If you inspect my graphtec studio file you'll see that there's a small, slightly lighter shaded line going across the outside of my stripes - does this mean it will be cutting the outside twice? I don't understand why the lines don't just conform to the shape - why is there a border going around the outside of my image?

    Thanks

edit* not permitted to upload gstudio files here it seems so I've uploaded it to a file hosting site. - http://www.filedropper.com/stripes
