My package of samples was basically very small color samples, nothing I could try out

I would think the heat gun is loosening the vinyl which will let it lift. After you squeegee well enough spray top of transfer paper and let sit for a moment then peel off gently. Sometimes when pulling transfer off the vinyl is not completely adhered and will lift in those places causing bubbles.

Any overlap will cause bubbles. Even when hinging vinyl st bottom to apply I always leave enough backing paper at bottom so none of my tape hits the vinyl -

Didn't read thru all comments but make sure you always prepress for about 6 seconds to get moisture out -

Just follow the instructions that comes with your thermal vinyl. Research transfer companies and ask for samples...some are better than others. I use Thermoflex and they come out great
