Coreldraw x6 & Roland gx-400

Recommended Posts

Hello, I am new to this forum as well as vinyl cutting in general, im hoping to find some help.

Here is my current situation, im using a roland gx-400 and coreldraw x6.

Some of the problems I am experiencing, maybe due to my lack of experience.

I am having trouble cutting from corel draw, I have searched and seen some conflicting information on cutting from corel draw period ( is it possible)

Provided this is possible, these are the steps I have been taking

1.     I create a simple image in corel draw, change it to wire frame, do the print preview, everything looks good, (image is in the top corner of the layout, I have tried centering the image, also placing the image in various locations, all within the print command)

2.     Click print, now this is where things get messy, the cutter will start to cut sometimes, and others it does not.  When it does cut, sometimes it cuts within the vinyl, (12” roll) other times it cuts right off the vinyl.

I am leaning towards this being my lack of experience with both coreldraw and roland.  I was hoping this was as easy as using autocad and a plotter.

What information I am look for:

can I cut with coreldraw?, or do I need to find another software to cut the image I make in corel draw?

Find another program to cut with.

That said. check your page layout when you "print" to your cutter. need to position to upper left. at least that is where kids email was set. if it is set to center of page or fit to page you will get weird results

im currently looking for a cutting program, id like to find something i can import from coreldraw, since i have gotten the hang of it pretty good.

i  have no problem making everything in coreldraw and then importing to another program to cut it, i dont think that would be much of an issue

Did you not get Roland CutStudio software for your GX400? https://www.rolanddga.com/products/software/roland-cutstudio-software

It should have come with the cutter. You may wish to contact Roland and find out more. It's easy to use and has plugins to export directly from Coreldraw and Illustrator directly to the cutter...

Even if you have to buy it because you don't have it, it's worth $69USD. It's made for Rolands. Chances are they might even give it to you if you bought your cutter retail and not used. Best bet is to contact Roland Support/Help. Not sure if you realize this but you have a $5000USD cutter...they better give you something! http://support.rolanddga.com/_layouts/rolanddga/productdetail.aspx?pm=gx-400 possibly bad news: http://support.rolanddga.com/_layouts/rolanddga/kbarticle.aspx?ArticleId=677&pm=gx-400

I had contacted them months ago, no deal, and I use windows 10.

They told me because my cuter was just out of the "grace" period of two years when I purchased it.

I also bought this cutter slightly used, honestly looked brand new.

it didn't come with anything, it was the cutter with a plug for the wall

so this being all new to me at the time, it has been some trial and error

but I have ordered vinylmaster, that will be here today. So I will be using coreldraw for the design part and hopefully vinylmaster for the cutter part of the process

Personally, I think you'll like Vinylmaster myself...but that being said...here are some important Windows 10 drivers for your GX-400. http://download.rolanddg.jp/en/cutting.html#gx34500

That's Roland's Japan website (where they make the cutters in the first place). Bookmark that site.. According to the Roland UK site and this topic: http://www.rolandforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=8944  if you update the drivers to the Windows 10 compatible ones, you should be able to get Cutstudio to work. But that is, if you wanted Cutstudio in the first place since you've gone the Vinylmaster route, you might not want it. Anyhow, good knowledge to note in your records for future.

PS, glad that other person with a similar name was not you. I'm sorry I jumped to conclusions. Welcome aboard here and please stick around :)

FYI, ran this through Google Translate since it's in Japanese but you might be in luck for Cutstudio for a small fee (3000 yen converts to $27 USD): https://translate.google.ca/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.rolanddg.co.jp%2Fsupport%2Findex.html&edit-text=&act=url

Click on the middle column of table at the bottom of the page, the one with the 3 CD/DVD like images (2 directly below the FAQ). Then, click on the Reissue the software included with the cutting product

You'll find a procedure to obtain the software.

Thank you for the info, I will give vinylmaster a shot, see how that it is first before I try to order cutstudio.

I use autocad and inventor daily at work, it's a shame I can't find a vinyl cut program that works exactly like that haha

i plan on sticking around here, tons of useful information out there, being that there are more experienced people here, is always a plus.

I plan on using the gx as a small scale side job type of thing, and maybe one day it could turn into something much larger scale, but that is just wishful thinking at this point.

Thanks again for the help.
