US Cutter Laserpoint 24

Recommended Posts

My cutter has been working great for over a year now. But yesterday my dedicated computer( only one I have with a serial port) starting having BIOS Rom errors. I noticed the cutter has another connection near the serial connection that looks like a USB connection like regular printers have. Can I connect it using that connection or what is it for? I've seen other people connecting the cutter using a USB adapter, so I was assuming this connection was for something different. Anyone know?

it is an either or, thing. you are best off using the serial connection. if that is not an option try the serial adapter at the computer end using the serial cable. if you don't have an adapter, then your final choice would be just a usb cable. it seems however that the usb connection is not up to par with the needs of the cutter. a lot of people have had problems cutting large or complicated designs on the usb connection. the serial connection seems to solve those issues. remember to use a good quality "null modem" serial cable.

The USB or serial wars continue and many people battle this one still.

Personally I use USB on all cutters I use and test.  It works great for me on 32bit or 64bit systems.

I don't have any problems with the usb connection.  Some people do, and some are hardcore serial fans.

I know there are situations where one is better than the other but I don't get into the ford/chevy mac/pc usb/serial wars.

You can definitely use the USB port on the cutter do operate it.

not trying to start any wars here. it is well documented that the lp machines don't like to cut large files by way of the usb connection. the fix has always been touse a good quality serial cable if you have the port on your computer. if you don't have a serial port, then the next best solution is a keyspan adapter used at the computer end of a serial cable. it may be that the users having trouble with the usb connection also have alot of other peripherals using usb connections as well.

I personally use usb (no serial port) I am not sure what you all define as large . but I cust a 15inch wide by 15 foot long piece of tshirt vinyl with about 40 differnet images for a flag football team. Doing all of this with usb port and had no problems. I am not sure if that qualifies as large but it seemed pretty big to me. They also sell serial port pci cards for your computer if you dont have a serial port or need another one. Pretty cheap at computer store these days.

Good luck

Just for a heads up, the null modem cable is for the MH series.  A laserpoint uses a straight thru 9 pin male to 9 pin female to connect to serial.

I just purchased a Laserpoint 24".  I hooked it up to the serial port and it would not communicate with the cutter. I contacted tech support and he remote accessed my computer. He told me to use the USB connection instead as it was better and I would have less connectivity issues. It took him only a few minutes to have the printer set up and cutting. I have not had problems so far but once I read this thread I am wondering why many say to use the serial port instead of the USB.
