I was cuting out some things last night and while weeding them I noticed that there was random cuts in the letters.  Huh?

Anyone know what causes this?

Very rarely are there any RANDOM cuts on a cutter, unless there is a machine problem. Most of the time the random cuts are either where the letters overlap, and in that case you select all the letters and weld them together prior to cutting. Or you have some wild nodes somewhere on the vector image.

Go into your design program and using the node editor, do a CTL + A. This will select all of the image, then you can see any errant nodes and delete them.

I have a problem with "random cuts" as well.  I am using Flexi 8 and a pcut 630. For some reason it will cut a diagonal line across the vinyl, nothing to be cut there... It does this on just about every job that I cut.  Any suggestions?  Thanks for any and all help.

Oh yes! This is EXACTLY the problem we are having. Our current cutter (who may soon get replaced!) is a Master Cutter by Desay. We are running SmartCut Pro with Windows Vista. When running a long job (today's project was 6' long) it will randomly put MANY diagonal lines in every direction across the vinyl. I bet the last piece I tried to cut today put about 20 various diagonal lines across it for no good reason.

If anyone can help us with this problem I would greatly appreciate it!

There are a few reasons for random or stray cuts.  If the plotter has been cutting other graphics OK and suddenly stray cuts, I would first check for an "Open Path" in your current graphic.  If there's definitely no open paths, then static build up maybe the cause, and you possibly need too earth the plotter.

USB connections can also cause stray cuts and erratic behaviour on plotters, try unplugging and re plugging your USB cable.  Check too see that USB is a nice firm connection, a "Parallel Port" connection is a more reliable and stable connection.

Memory on very large graphics or long runs, sometimes can also be a problem.
