Driver vs Comm protocol

Recommended Posts

Just a bit of a rant, something that has bothered me for awhile on the forums. People keep using the term Driver incorrectly. A device driver allows the machine to talk to the Operating System of your computer. Drivers have to be installed and are rarely included in software such as VinylMaster, SignBlazer, etc. What you are selecting in those programs is the communication protocol, and any unique commands that the cutters use.

So for example. If you are using the serial port of a cutter, you don't need a driver for your cutter. You need a driver for the serial port and the commands to control the cutter are determined by the cutter selection in your software.
