Donated LP 631E - Junk or Treasure?

Recommended Posts

A community member donated "dropped off" a US Cutter LP 631E to our public library. It is just the unit, a power cord, and a USB cable. No stand, documentation, software, accessories were included. I plugged it in and it turns on. I think it would be a great addition to our library Makerspace but I don't want to sink any money into it unless I know it works as it should. Is there a simple way to test this machine using some of our vinyl we use for our Cricut?

Thanks for any feedback!

Cutter should have a TEST feature in the menu.  Most draw like a square with a triangle in it.   You could use Signblazer software which is a FREE unlimited trial.    Use the last link on these downloads.   Choose a Creation Pcut  vinyl cutter.   You will also have to download a FTDI driver for which ever computer you are using if connecting thru USB.  Good luck.  You can use just sign vinyl for cutting.   Here is the correct way to set the blade depth.

To start with, you should set your blade depth correctly, by taking the blade holder out of the machine, and firmly cut across a piece of scrap vinyl, you will be cutting. You should only be cutting the vinyl and barely a mark on wax paper backing, Adjust blade to get there, Then put the blade holder back in machine, and use the force of the machine to get there, same results, only cutting the vinyl and barely a mark in wax paper backing. You should barely see and feel the blade out of the blade holder. Regular sign vinyl is only 2-3 mil thick. You only cut with the very tip of the blade.
