How would i do this?

I have Vinylmaster DSR and found a solid colour elephant graphic in the clip art.

I want to make a outline around it so the centre will be the tshirt colour.

I used the outline tool and it looked great but when i sent it to cutter I seperated by color  But it did not just cut the  black outline it seemed not to see the outline and cut the elephant shape as a solid colour?

So the red would be the actual t shirt material? It just cut the outline of the elephant and the letters?

Select both the elephant and the red, Object > Shaping > Punch Out (Back minus Front)

I'm not as familiar with VM but in Inkscape if you do an outline, the outline then needs to be converted to a path. If left as just as outline the cutter only sees the original single line of the original design. While you're still learning it's always a good idea to look at your design in wireframe mode to get a better idea of what the cutter sees.
