Design question when not selling

I have an image that is copyrighted and i havent been able to find where i can get the rights to it and a friend is wanting to put on the back of his trailer,He is willing to buy  and supply the material so im not out anything in a certain degree except time to cut it .Am i able to create it without having someone ask him without 3rd degree of having it ? I know he can probably get a smaller image of it but he is wanting  a much larger design which i will have to cut it out in several pieces to make it work with the rest of the design he had me make to go with it ...Over all size is going to be about 40 inches roughly...

I found one site that was selling the image , but i dont know if they had the rights to sell the vector image even tho they were wanting money for it ...

I would have to tell you to keep searching for the owner. Some of the things out there are hard to track down.
