I find it necessary to cut the paper backing in order to more readily apply the vinyl once section at a time. Has anyone ever done this? Or similar to this? I can cut the paper backing but the vinyl itself on the bottom for the last cut stretches and tears. Are there any remedies someone can recommend?

Pretty sure I bought mine here at USCutter but I can't find it anywhere now. Has a little spring that is somewhat adjustable and it will cut the top layer (in our application the backing) and leave the vinyl. Works pretty good and really makes you loom professional when you whip it out on a job and cut the backing before the install.

i do it once in awhile and this is what i use and love it.Its called a wrap cut knife.Very easy to use,Cuts the backing and not the vinyl. You cut from the backside of material.  You just have to keep the material square and loose.Any tension will cause it to stretch and possibly tear.Ive never tore one yet..The last job i did was a 24" by 8 foot and 10 foot section by myself..Wasnt fun but got it done.

I've got the same knife and got it from US Cutter, although I don't think they carry it any more.  It works exactly as you would expect based on the description.  You may have to adjust the depth of cut a bit to get it perfectly dialed in, but once you do it works great every time.
