Vinyl loses adhesiveness during winter ?

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody

3 weeks ago i cut my vinyl (Brand FS ) and shipped to my client where the climate usually gets very chilled during night.Today i got a call from him complaining that the vinyl is hardly sticking.

Since the brand's backpaper is very thin..i had removed the original backpaper and put on a thick one so i can get accurate designs.

what can be the issue ?

I am planning on switching to ORACAL brand. but need to pinpoint the cause of the problem

Any veteran vinyl users here ?

What is he sticking it to? Glass? Car paint?

Maybe he did not clean the surface well or let the adhesive get exposed to windex or alcohol from not drying the surface? Multiple factors could cause this...oily/waxed surface, temperatures too cold for application, or just bad vinyl could cause this.

I don't buy cheap vinyl just for reasons such as this. I mostly use Oracal 751 or 951 for glass and Avery SW900 wrap vinyl for anything on painted surfaces such as cars and trucks.

Caveat emptor

If applied below 50 degrees it's a crapshoot if it stays on.

Have I applied decals in cold temps? yes, have they stayed stuck ? yes.

Did I tell you how cold ? no  it depends on a bunch of things how cold the surface is, how cold the deal is, size of decal etc.......

Best advice is to apply above 50 degrees with a room temp decal.

Making nail stencils

By cold I mean only 27-28 degree Celsius

However I remember... I removed the original backpaper of the vinyl and stuck it on a rough hardpaper also kept them open.. Exposed to air and dust

If you consider 27C (80F) cold, what do you call hot?

Why did you removing the backpaper?

Why did you removing the backpaper?

because the vinyl brand i am using is from china and very thin.

the plotter needle makes causes the vinyl to shake lil bit ..so removed the vinyl and stuck it on a thick cardboard paper
