kainth.c.s 53 Posted September 28, 2015 Hello guys!!! I came accross a vinyl fascia that needs to be printed. The guy has a 150 X 150 size jpg files but the fascia is 2.5 metres by 1.2 metres. It has a lot of details (being for a local community grocery store, it has a lot of pics of spices and misc items). Is there any command or feature available in any of the following softwares to increase the jpg file size or redraw it without compromising with the quality? Adobe IllustratorCS6 Flexi Starter 10 Corel Draw X6. I mucked around and called some signage guys and was told that one and the only one way is to import the file in photoshop and redraw it as a whole. regards C.S.Kainth
dcbevins 340 Posted September 28, 2015 Recreating the raster file as a vector file would seem like the desirable approach. The resulting vector would be resolution independent. This means tracing over the image by hand with the Pen tool in Draw, Illustrator, Inkscape or any such vector program. Sometimes the auto-trace tool can do it. But often it is no magic bullet except for simple cases. This is sometimes daunting if one has never done any such tracing. But it is an absolute must have skill in many cases. Youtube has a great number of tutorial on this.
skarekrow 1,842 Posted September 28, 2015 There is sometimes a little to be gained through different types of 'upsampling' but, most often, (as dc stated) in extreme cases (like yours sounds)manual redraw yields the most exemplary results.
dcbevins 340 Posted September 28, 2015 Post the offending jpg, and as everyone can see you are dedicated to this, albeit new to it all, I am sure an outpouring of suggestions if not a outright solution will follow. Plus, you don't wan't to recreate in Photoshop, it would still be raster. Illustrator or Draw would be vector.
skarekrow 1,842 Posted September 29, 2015 QUOTE>"...you don't wan't to recreate in Photoshop, it would still be raster." Sorry bevins... gotta call you on that one. Though Photoshop's notoriety is through it's excellence in pixel based image work, it is certainly vector capable. I create and/or trace and redraw Vector (paths) in Photoshop all the time then File>Export>Paths to Illustrator as a .ai vector. Most people don't realize (or use) the vector capabilities of Ps. ... and one of the most intuitive Pen tools out there, IMO.
dcbevins 340 Posted September 29, 2015 Yes, it can deal with paths. A TIFF file will hold path information also, but I wouldn't use in a vector workflow. But why would you use PS when you also had Illustrator? Maybe I am just too Draw centric.
skarekrow 1,842 Posted September 29, 2015 Perhaps "all the time" should have been "many times in the past". As in "not so much lately as I have better tools than Ps for vector work" However; My main point is that Ps indeed has useful vector capabilities. For simple projects where there are several pixel based modification or separation techniques planned to prepare for trace/ redraw, it's easy for me to grab the pen tool and do the path work for initial boundaries or shapes. Just another arrow in my quiver, I guess... Since no software seems to perfectly cover all the bases, proficiency in many (Illustrator, Inkscape, VinylMaster, Photoshop and inDesign) feels like the bases are well covered plus greater tool-chain flexibility and options. kainth.c.s 53 Posted September 30, 2015 dcbevins Please find the image attached. It is to be reprinted as for a 2.5 metres by 1.2 metres fascia Regards C.S.Kainth
kainth.c.s 53 Posted September 30, 2015 I will give photoshop a try but I have been told it takes forever; not the tracing but the cleanup. Regards C.S.kainth
skarekrow 1,842 Posted September 30, 2015 Not a chance of making that a sharp, usable image for a print 2.5 meters long. If you can secure hi-res images of the individual items that are on the plate, I can create a replica, but, that one's beyond use at that size. ... and what is that hanging down from the top edge? Bread?
Sue2 920 Posted September 30, 2015 You can't make a silk purse out of that...... Recreating it from scratch is all you can do with a file that size. Sue2
skarekrow 1,842 Posted October 1, 2015 Just a quickie... (Why do I use Photoshop, bevins?... 'cause I can. ...and for many projects, It already does what other software wishes it could do and because of that, and most importantly, it sells jobs. This file I created in Ps at 600 dpi at 28,000 pixels wide. It is ready to print without pixelation or the sacrafices vectors would force on the veggies and bread. This is , for obvious reasons, a low-res version.)
