Tools not showing in AI

Recommended Posts

I'm just trying to learn AI,  I have CS3, I watched a video on adobe tv and went to try what I'd learned and when I opened AI there were no tools showing like in the video. Nothing down the left side, nothing at the top.  See attached screenshot.  Is there something I need to click to get all of the tools showing?  I can't figure this out.

You might also find it helpful to turn on the rulers. This is found in View>Show Rulers. You can right click on the ruler itself and change the measure from pts, picas, inches etc...

I'll give you another tip. Go into preferences (probably in the Edit menu in your version) and in the general tab check the box that says Object selection by path only. Also might check the Scale stroke and effects although not everyone does. The selection by path makes it so you have to select objects by the edge of their path. This saves a lot of issues where otherwise you will often select things you don't want to.

The other really awesome thing I suggest to everyone new is to go to View>Hide Bounding Box and get rid of the bounding box. Objects will be highlighted by their path (which you will be using to select them) rather than having the box handles out all over the place. It is a lot more intuitive working this way IMO and AI is THE ONLY PROGRAM that allows the option to do this. For this reason alone I have never enjoyed working with most other programs. If you need the box it's always available (Shift+Ctrl+B) but the occasion to use it is so rare I almost never do. About the only things I ever use the bounding box for would include quick manipulation of a basic object like a square or ellipse or something or for really quick manipulation of text like if you are making one of those baby boards that has the name, date, size and weight all sized to end up on a tile it helps quickly manipulate things in that scenario. The rest of the time the annoying little handles are just in the way.

Mine will do that sometimes. I go to Window>>>Workspace>>>My Workspace. Default should work too.
