Problem with EPS file!

Recommended Posts

Hello!  I've been lurking here for a while.  I've had my MH Series Cutter since November and I have had a lot of business with it.  It's paid for itself numerous times over.  I am moving up to bigger stuff and have a job to put some large decals on a couple of trailers.  The lady has a vector file but it's an EPS file.  I've never encountered an EPS file until now and I cannot get it to load into the program.  I have tried numerous conversion programs to convert it to SVG but nothing is working.  When it's converted, it's nothing like the image you see below.  I attached the EPS file.  Does anybody have a program that can convert this for me?  I'm hoping to have this job done real soon.  It's only two colors but I can easily work with it if it's just one color.  Thanks for any help!

Thank you!  Unfortunately, SCALP4 which I'm using, doesn't seem to recognize EPS files at all.  I was hoping it could be converted to a SVG.  I appreciate you trying to help!

YES!!!  Excellent!  That works!  I definitely appreciate the fast help on this one!  How did you do that if you don't mind me asking?

Heck no he doesn't mind. That's the fun of a forum, helping you guys get on your feet and running. Try downloading the free program Inkscape. It will open most vector file types and then you can reserve them as an svg file. IMO it's probably a better design program than the SCALP you are running also but you would still need SCALP or some other cutting utility to send files to your cutter.

Yeah.  I have Inkscape.  I have a lot of learning to do on there.  I tried importing it into Inkscape but it doesn't recognize EPS files either.  Personally, I've found SCALP to be very easy to use and I've done a LOT of work with it.  I have been real surprised at how much business I've had.  I can barely keep up with it at times.  I'm about to buy a couple more machines.  Looking at a Roland GX 24 and a 50" SC cutter for the stuff that's too big for my 34" MH Series cutter which can really only do about 29" wide.

Maybe you should contact support about that..  Because their website says it does.

Happy 2Oblige

Opened it in VinylMaster,

removed the superfluous parts,

punched & welded the remainder &

resaved in svg format.

There were 'unset' stroke attributes in some of the text. Many vector

programs balk at this issue. SignCut is one... SCALP may be another.

VinylMaster seems to ignore (or at least tolerate) conflicting stroke data.

In Inkscape, where I have selected the "m", you can see that the question mark in the stroke attributes

panel on the right is indicating an issue. The program is also indicating there are 'unset' stroke attributes

in the lower left pane. Right click here and choose 'remove stroke' on pop-up menu.

Another sure sign the text contains hidden strokes is by selecting a letter and then Stroke > Path which

will convert the stroke to curves and drop the fill color. (large center circle)

(also, Inkscape doesn't read eps files without 'GhostScript' in your PATH statement.

even then, it's darn slow & temperamental  with that format and  ai/pdf)

It would have also worked  as an .ai file...   I just downloaded the Scalp demo.....Exported out of Flexi 10 as an ai file....  Worked fine.

There are also FREE   .eps to PDF file convertors online,  If that helps in the future..   Says Scalp imports PDF files

I've had some trouble with those EPS formats in the past. Sometimes it just depends on where you're getting them from. Inkscape has already been suggested and I would recommend it. For a free software it's actually pretty good. I haven't had much of a chance to work with SCAL4P but it should be similar to 3. But Craft Edge never really gave us a whole lot of info for it since they just sort of released it on their own.

SVG and .ai files seem to be the easiest with SCALP though. It's always hard when you get files from customers since you have no idea who made them or what program they used to vectorize them. Just keep Inkscape handy and convert them when you need to. Or of course ask the helpful folks here. :)
