So I had to move the laser to the garage.  I wanted to upgrade the blower and the new one was WAY to loud for inside the house.

This caused me to have to completely redesign the garage because I had no room for it. So the lasers been down for a few weeks.

Here's the garage transformation.

This is what I Started with.  I good friend is letting me store my trailer and a few other big item to help clear some space.

post-69458-0-62894100-1433740574_thumb.j

I started building a loft to store alot of stuff.

post-69458-0-61038700-1433740654_thumb.j

Here's the completed project.   Overhead loft for storage and a new bench.   I built the bench 34" deep so I have plenty of working area even with the bins and drill press against the wall.

post-69458-0-42622800-1433740723_thumb.j

That created plenty of room for the laser.

post-69458-0-17620000-1433740859_thumb.j

I mounted the new blower up in the attic/crawl space.    It's completely exhausts all fumes and smoke from the laser now.

The 6" duct runs up and into the blower and then out through a soffit vent. There's a roar from all the air that it's moving but overall the noise isn't too bad.  The new blower TRIPLED my CFMs inside the box.

I then had to make a warning sign because.................  You know I have a laser.

 post-69458-0-25999700-1433741099_thumb.j

And I started making key chains.  Still practicing, nothing crazy.

And the project this weekend was a lightbox.   NOT the kind you guys use but the kind a photographer would use because I have to take some killer pic of rolls of tape.  LOL

Once I start producing products I think it'll come in handy.

Nope!!   I took a few key elements from a few acticles and came up with my own design.

I used a spare sheet of PVC sign substrate to make the box and a twin size sheet I got a walmart as the light diffuser.

It's hinged in 3 places so that it all folds up for easy storage.

Glad you posted this! Ive been looking at those laser engravers on ebay.  Have you tried it on metal?

It will not cut or etch metal.....It will take the anodization off of aluminum though......And you can look into this stuff called cermark,It's a cream you apply to metal and wherever the laser hits the cream it turns it black...Almost like sublimation....

Yep it's right.

If you look at the key chains there are some metal dog tags I removed the anodizing from.

No problem.    I'll be happy to ship you everything 100% free.   All you have to do is pay for shipping and handling which happens to come to about $5000.  :)

How wide and thick of material can you cut?

My cutting bed is 11.8"x19.5".

The normal max thickness is about 1/4".  I could cut thicker with a few extra passes but it's not really recommended.

I'm limited by my 40W tube.   At some point in the future i'll upgrade the tube and power supply to a 60W or 80W system.

Wow, those look nice! How does the laser cut compare with the sandblasted etch? The sandblast can deliver a nice "textured" etch. What is the lasers cut like?

The glass work is pretty awesome.
But I have to wonder how cost is on using it.
I'm assuming that the laser is a wear item. So is it a better value vs sandblasting?

I still want one. LOL!

This took about 4 weeks of fabrication work.  Lots of trial and error.

The rotary that came with the laser was just rollers that turned a glass.   It was very difficult to do odd shape glasses.

To get a pint glass to level with the laser you had to angle it up but this also caused the glass to slide down the rollers.  Just a pain.   Looked like this.

post-69458-0-95022100-1443936847_thumb.j

I ended up designing and making my own based off of some pictures I had seen.  This one allows me to adjust the angle of only 1 side of the glass. It also lets me engrave glasses with handles now.  Everything was laser cut including the gears.   I spent 3 days learning now gears work.  You'd be surprised all the calculations involved with designing gears.

Here's a video of the final product. You have NO idea the HUGE since of accomplishment I felt watching this engrave it's first glasses. The process it super easy now.  remove old glass, place a new glass on the rollers and hit start. 3min and 30sec later I have a perfectly etched glass.

And here's my last post showing off my work.

This piece ISN'T finished yet.  I still need to sand and seal it.   After that I'll engrave the Orlando Cars and Coffee logo on it.

Completely laser cut.  I got it on the first try.  It fits together perfectly with alittle help from a hammer without any glue.
