cutter choices - some help choosing please

Recommended Posts

MzSkeeter, that app taping accessory is sweet.

dnjpowell, all the replies have been regarding USCUTTER branded units, which are basically Chinese-made imports sold by USCUTTER as their models.

Your hard-earned $600 for the LPII is not going to be wasted, trust me.

The profits in this business are excellent, and once people know you offer computer-cut decals for car & van rear windows and banner lettering and magnetics for vehicle doors, and those yard signs, you'll be off and running to the bank.

The static kit seems logical, and for $15 is a fair deal.

Oh, one last thing ----  try and avoid using the cutter with USB, and stick with a serial cable to your computer (assuming your computer has a serial port).

Mz Skeeter I have a large banquet table too, that's perfect idea!! I have a feeling I'll have to tackle storage for vinyl too hahahaha :D

Don't get us started on vinyl storage !!!!

With a 30" cutter, you'll be handling 15" rolls, 24" rolls, 30 " rolls, and an increasing 'scrap pieces' collection as things move along.

This is the rack I have ---

Yes there have been replies regarding the USC brand items but also the LPII, which is one I had not asked about.  It's all been informative and has me thinking outside the box. Someone msgd me and suggested a GCC expert as well.. which is another I've not looked into. So many options for us newbies it can make your head swim! LOL

Oh I like that vinyl storage unit! I've seen them as a wall mount too and just tossed on couches, corners and floors - this will be a challenge LOL

Yes, I do have a serial port on my computer, that's not a problem.  Is the USB connection quirky to use?

USB can have issues however I used to run a LP2 on usb without issue. They're hit and miss on usb but serial is a much better way to go.

I ran a P-Cut for several years on a USB just fine. It was similar to the laser point. My 2 cents: Spend a little extra on the cutter like going to the LP2. If you have space having the 30 capability only opens doors of opportunity. My first cutter was a 48" unit and I never used 48" vinyl ever. Did occasionally use some 30" stuff once in a while and it's nice to be able to do it if you need to. You won't need to worry about stocking 30" product. I stock primarily 24". Seems to be the best value and fits most work. When I have a specific need I go bigger or drop down to 15" if it will be more cost effective for a certain job. Don't feel you need to drop hundreds of dollars on rolls of vinyl. Just grab some black, white and maybe a couple others like bright red etc... the rest just order when you actually get a job and you'll soon have left over end rolls adding to your inventory that are either paid for from the original job or at least were needed for a good reason not just cause you thought you would need them. Again your actual work will eventually dictate the colors and sizes so let the work tell you what to get after you actually have the work to do. You can usually get 50% up front on jobs and that will always cover your materials so your clients will pay for your inventory and USCutter delivers pretty fast to me at least so 2 days shipped and start cutting.

The starter kits aren't bad because you have NOTHING when you start out but you will quickly find that most of it is pretty low budget stuff. I use completely different squeegee's, rulers, tape dispensers....everything than when I started up.

Oh another note. You WILL want several widths of app tape and it's a fair investment because they are very large rolls. Depending on your work you will settle in on a few basic sizes that are best for you. I recommend spending a little more and getting the higher quality tape for at least the wider sizes. I keep a 24" roll, a 15" roll a 10" roll of clear and sometimes a 12" roll of the cheap house brand of tape which does ok for the smaller stuff but it has more ragged edges which can be troublesome. You could very easily start with a 12" roll and then add more as you figure out how big you really want.  If you need it wider you can do a double pass. this can cause a little rift of bubbles ling the lap but will get you by in a pinch.

I have a 25"x 36" green cutting mat that my wife bought me one year and it has been my favorite. I also love using a 24-1/2"x 6-1/2" Fiskars sewing ruler (see through with 1/4" lines) that used to be hers that works awesome to trim up the final asked product with nice even reveal. Helps a lot when it's time to install if you have true edges to use for measurement. I buy xacto blades in hundred packs and always use professional grade masking tape for application hinges that I buy at a local auto body repair supply (American PG is the best). I use 3/4" and usually keep a roll of 2" too. The stuff costs twice as much as the stuff you get at walmart of home depot but its more than worth it and a small part of the overall cost picture.

You will learn a lot on this forum and the folks here are the nicest around. Good luck. Most if not all of us were in your shoes at one time or the other so we know how hard it is to figure out if this will work out or not and what to choose.

They try to do this during their day job and I think the guy on the phone gets (as he should) priority over the forum. Until they decide to hire a dedicated person to hang out here and goof off, I mean, with the rest of us this is how it usually goes.
