Personal artwork vs Doing artwork for a customer

Recommended Posts

Why is it I can knock out requests for customers, yet hit the proverbial wall when I try to design stuff for myself?? Anyone else have this problem??  LOL We're starting a hunting club and I can't for the life of me get the creative juices flowing.

Happens all the time with me lol. I had my cornhole boards unfinished for over a year cause I couldn't come up with the perfect logo. It also seems Im too busy working on other stuff I never get time to work on my own.

The trick to making that happen is to create a job sheet, with you as the client.

Step back and view it dispassionately, as if you were outside looking in. Imagine youself as someone who knows nothing about how you work, and pretend that you want work done just like anyone else who normally approaches you, and follow all the steps that you would with them.

I go by the following six-point process, while trying not to get bogged down at any of the points, so I'll go from 1 - 6 as smoothly and efficiently as possible.

1. Interview and Jobsheet

2. Design (and Proof Approval)

3. Cut

4. Weed

5. Tape

6. Drop (apply onto substrate)

Then hand the finished job to the client and get paid.

I do the same so it's not just you. I order an extra tee or sweatshirt pretty regular and think that I'll make something fun for myself and then agonize over what to put on it. When the sky's the limit it's hard to decide what you want to be wearing around.

It seems like this should be an easy thing to do, but every time I get an idea I google it and see several very similar to what I want to do. I want either a menacing duck skull or just a menacing looking duck, maybe even with a cigar in his mouth. But there's too many too close to what I want. I'd feel like I was ripping them off. LOL

I'm only part time but it happens to me as well. I have so much I'd like to do for myself but when I have the time for it I hit the creative wall. I can get a phone call with a request and an idea and my wheels start turning almost instantly. The next day I'll have two versions to choose from. Not sure if it's the money or desire to please the client or what but it does seem to come easier when it's for a client.

My wife is probably right when she says it's because I am my own worst critic. I'm sure that goes for most of us.
