Newbie! (please be gentle) --- US CUTTER MH 721 question

Recommended Posts

Good afternoon,

I am extremely new to the entire vinyl cutting business.

I have Orajet Digital Print media - Purchased it second hand from this guy, so it really came with no instructions.  I only know its orajet print media because it says so on the water mark on the back.

Additionally I have ARLON vinyl as well ... Can you please tell me what these particular brands are good for?

My questions are :::

1 - Can I use this vinyl (Orajet) for regular graphics that would be applied to an automobile windshield?

2 - What pressure and speed should I use to cut this particular vinyl?? with the US Cutter MH 721?

Any information would be awesome.

Attached is a wall decal I did using the black Arlon Vinyl I have .... That one works OK ... Just a bit concerned about the OraJet , can I basically use it to do the same thing? As I did with the Arlon?

Thank you in advance.

The orajet vinyl is really made to be printed on so I would probably stay away from that as a cut vinyl. For vehicle graphics I would recommend Oracal 751 or Oracal 951 since they are cast vinyl with an outdoor life of 5+ years. All I do is pretty much vehicle graphics and have never really looked beyond Oracal (except for wraps or specialty vinyl) because I have been extremely pleased with the outcome and color selections.

I don't think you will have any issues using the Orajet product as a white vinyl. It's probably much thicker than regular 2 mil cast vinyl or 3 mil calendared. It should be either white or transparent and if it's white I see printed graphics with part of the white showing all the time so I can't but help think you will be fine. You may have to set your blade depth much longer to get through it and it probably won't like detailed cuts as much due to thickness.

Arlon makes all kinds of vinyl so you may want to try and figure out what it is exactly. May show on the branding on the back of the backing. Look it up if it has any numbers on there and they will have the application data online somewhere.

There are two main types of standard vinyl. Calendared and Cast. Calendared is made by basically rolling out cookie dough until it's the thickness they want and then cured and cut to width and cast is mixed up in a polymer solution and sprayed out and cured. So the cast has no memory and is typically much more flexible higher quality vinyl and conforms to curves better with little or no shrinkage. Calendared is thicker and has a tendency to shrink over time, some brands worse than others. Oracal 651 is a high quality calendared that is pretty stable and a favorite among most of us on the forum. For vehicles I typically spend the little extra and step up to at least the 751 Oracal product. More color choices and better life span as well as a little easier to work with.

Good luck with your cutter and welcome to the forum. You will find that this particular group is very nice with lots less tendency to flame you for being new. Still happens once in a while but is usually an earned response.

I bought a 24" graphtech and have only been using Oracal 651 for vehicle decals, signs, then Oracal 631 for temporary/removable jobs. I don't normally go higher unless the client specifically needs 6+ year vinyl... for example the current jobs have been on areas/vehicles that get turned over every 4 or 5 years max. It could be a company car that gets repainted or written off, a business that refreshes their logo etc.

I know you didn't mention these products, but just my 2 cents! I'm very new as well! I go through Fellers for all my supplies and they graciously provided me with free color guide books, samples, a tour of their warehouse and it has just been awesome!

I've dealt with Feller's on occasion when I needed it super fast. If your not in that big of a rush check the prices at uscutter.com They're hard to beat.
